Spotlight on Team Choice Home Health

Choice provides nurse-managed homecare solutions 24/7 for people living in Ottawa and surrounding regions. Founded in 2011 as Choice Homecare and later expanding with Choice Healthcare in 2021, the organization now serves more than 500 patients annually.

Choice’s 120 field workers provide a wide range of homecare programs and support services, including respite care, hospital discharge, complex and palliative care. Their clientele includes seniors, veterans, and people living with acquired brain injury, dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Kelly Prevost is the General Manager of Choice Homecare and has been with the organization since 2012. “We believe in Customized Care for Every Need. As 24% of our patients have indicated French as their preferred language of service, we want to ensure that they do receive it.

Choice got involved with the Winning Strategies after receiving a newsletter. “We already were trying to expand access to French-language homecare services for our patients, but having a third party come in and check what we were doing made us feel much more confident in our ability to succeed.”

Kelly mentions that partnering with Winning Strategies helped them develop improvement initiatives to strengthen care delivery. By tracking each referral and matching French-speaking patients with bilingual staff, they can ensure not only quality of care, but also trust, comfort, and cultural respect for patients and their families.

As for the impacts on patients of implementing the Winning Strategies, Kelly says: “Absolutely positive! Language plays such a vital role in delivering safe and compassionate care. We know that geriatric patients tend to lose their second language, so by strengthening our bilingual services, we’re ensuring that more patients feel understood and supported in their own homes.”

To meet this need, Choice has built a strong bilingual workforce. Currently, 27% of its field staff are French-speaking, and 36% of office staff are fluent in French, enabling smooth communication from the very first point of contact through ongoing care management.

Choice has an office in Ottawa but serves patients from Carleton Place to Hawkesbury and as far south as Morrisburg. They are members of the Archipel Ontario Health Team.

Ontario is modernizing the delivery of French-language health services

The Ontario government is improving healthcare access for francophones by creating a new French-Language Health Planning Centre. Designed in partnership with the Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO) and Hôpital Montfort, the new centre will better address the needs of francophone communities and make it easier for French speakers to connect to health care closer to home.

The Centre opened September 1, 2025, with a mandate to modernize and improve health-care services and outcomes for francophones. It oversees planning, policies, programs, funding and resource decisions and stems from the evolution of the six provincial entities into a single centre. For more information, please visit CPSSF.
