June 2022 

We are nearing the end of spring and entering into the start of summer! This is my favourite time of year when I get to do all my favourite activities outdoors such as hiking, biking, and playing tennis. June is the best time to explore Kelowna's backyard. My favourite trails are Lebanon Creek Greenway, Okanagan Rail Trail, Fintry Falls, and Lockview Trail. It's great to get outside and enjoy spending time with friends and family. Make these moments fun by biking to get ice cream or ending a hike with a picnic. 

I encourage you to get out and try something fun this month! We have a variety of activities such as stand up paddle boarding, rock climbing, and golf. Also take advantage of the warm weather and try new ways to visit your favourite places like a café by walking or biking to get there. Soak in some sunshine, connect with others, and take some time for yourself to do something for you! I hope you have a wonderful start to the summer season!

Facilities & Services

  • UBC has extended the mask mandate until June 30th. Face Coverings are still required until individuals are actively engaged in exercise and are recommended during exercise. Please wear your mask when entering/exiting the facility and in all public spaces (lobbies, hallways, bathrooms, etc.)

  • Convocation will take place in the gymnasium on June 9 & 10. Congratulations to all the graduates! Please note that only the upper Hangar Fitness Centre will be open to members on these days. 

  • The facility (including the Hangar Fitness Centre and Gymnasium) will be closed on June 20 & 21 for maintenance. 

Summer Hours 

  • May 1 - August 31, 2022:

    • Weekdays – 8:00am-8:00pm.

    • Weekends & Holidays – 8:00am-6:00pm.

Open Gym

Whenever the gym is not booked for a particular activity, the gym is considered “open” for drop-in sports. Participation in Open Gym requires an active facility membership. Check out the schedule below for available times!

Group Fitness Classes

Classes are operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must have an active Membership or purchase a Day Pass ($5 for students) to attend classes.

Summer Schedule


Pound Fitness Classes

Channel your inner rockstar with this full body cardio-jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums to the beat of the music. This high energy, rock inspired workout challenges your cardio, core, and is a great conditioning program for your upper body, legs and glutes, too! Join us for our next 6-week session starting July 7.

Dates: Thursdays July 7-August 11 (no class on July 28)

Time: 12:00-1:00pm

Location: Studio 1, Hangar Fitness Centre

Cost: $50 for 6 classes


Kickboxing Lessons

Join Recreation for a 5-week session of kickboxing classes at the UBCO Hangar Fitness Centre. Only $40 for 5 sessions. Learn a new skill while working up a sweat with this exciting sport! 

Dates: Wednesdays, June 15 - July 13 or July 20 - August 17

Time: 6:30-7:30pm

Cost: $40 for 5 classes


Latin Dance Classes

Join us for Latin Dance with UBCO Recreation. Registration is just $40 for 5 weekly classes.

There are limited spots available so sign up today to learn a new style of dance or improve your skills!

Staff & Faculty Pickleball

Join UBCO Recreation for Register and Play Staff and Faculty Pickleball in the gymnasium! Registration is free and open for all staff and faculty.

GoByBike Week

Whether you're a regular cyclist or a novice, GoByBike Week is a great way to enjoy the fresh air and improve your health while reducing your carbon footprint. Register your team or join UBCO Recreation's team. Join us for a GoByBike Week Celebration Station at UBCO on Wednesday, June 1 from 7:00-9:00am between the Admin Building and EME.

UBCycles Summer Tune-Ups, Storage Lockers, and Bike Rentals 

Summer is here and UBCycles has got you covered for all of your riding essentials. UBCycles is providing tune ups and bike rentals for you to start summer riding. We are also offering basic and all access memberships that give you access to our bike tools, indoor bike lockers and storage lockers at our shop on campus. Enjoy the outdoors by riding on some trails or in the sunshine this summer.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding Lessons

Get out on the water this spring with the Kelowna Paddle Centre for three sessions of paddle boarding lessons!

Sessions include a paddle board lesson and rentals, including a paddle board, life jacket, and paddle.

Dates: Sundays, June 12-26, July 10-24, or August 7-21

Time: 1:00-2:30pm

Location: 3020 Abbott Street

Cost: $70 ($50 for students) for three lessons


Disc Golf Lessons

Join us Thursdays for a 4-week session of Disc Golf with the Kelowna Disc Golf Association (KDGA).

Registration is just $40 for 4 weekly classes. Your registration will include your membership to the KDGA for the year which will allow you to participate in any of the KDGA events throughout the year.

Dates: Thursdays, June 2-23

Time: 5:30-6:30pm

Location: UBCO Commons Field & Knox Mountain Disc Golf Course

Golf Lessons

Golf lessons at the Okanagan Golf Club starting this spring! Group lessons are a great way to learn all aspects of the game with your friends in a fun and relaxing environment.

Lessons include 4, 1-hour sessions on Monday nights.

Dates: June 13 - July 4; July 11 - August 3, and more! 

Time: 6:00-7:00pm or 7:15-8:15pm

Location: Okanagan Golf Club – 3200 Via Centrale

Cost: $79 for Students; $99 for Staff


Rock Climbing Drop-Ins

Enjoy student, staff, & faculty drop-in Tuesdays and Fridays until the end of August. Climb anytime during the day for a $12 drop-in which is a $3 savings. Shoe and harness rental for $2.25. No registration is required - just show your student card or UBC ID!

Dates: Tuesdays and Fridays all summer long
