Loss of autonomy is defined as the inability of a person to perform certain daily tasks on their own, such as cooking, washing or driving. This incapacity is caused by the progressive decline in physical (fatigue, falls, incontinence, etc.), cognitive (memory, attention, confusion, etc.) or social (isolation) functioning.
It is not unusual, as a caregiver, for you to accompany your elderly loved one with loss of autonomy to their medical appointments. However, it can be hard to know which professionals to contact for answers to your questions and to meet the needs of the care receiver, both before and after a diagnosis.
