Connecting Through COVID: Tech Help & Computer Access

Bowen Library is pleased to present the Connecting Through COVID program, providing library access and technical assistance to seniors and other vulnerable populations to find and use online resources that will support them during the pandemic and beyond.

We are offering:

  • Seniors' Hours  specific times for seniors only to use the library (Thursdays 10 am-12 pm)
  • Special Tech Tutor times for in-person and remote help with devices and technological help.
  • Public Internet Computer — 45-minute sessions available; black & white printer available.

Tech Tutoring 1-hour Appointments: Whether you have your own device or not, we can help you navigate the online world that is becoming the “new normal.” From doctor’s appointments to family gatherings, COVID has changed the way we connect and the way we have our needs met. The Connecting Through COVID program is here to help you use the online resources, platforms, and government services that will connect you to health, financial, and social support. Masks, plexi-barriers and safety protocols are in place for in-person appointments. Remote appointments also available. Book by email at techtutor@bowenlibrary.ca or by phone (604) 947-9788.

Public Internet Computer: Don't have a device, want to check your email, or need to print out an important document? Book a 45-minute appointment by email to info@bowenlibrary.ca or by phone (604) 947-9788, or drop in to check availability. Masks required.

The Connecting Through COVID program is provided in partnership with the Bowen Island Health Centre Foundation and is supported by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Bowen Island Community Foundation.

StoryWalk® Stations Coming Soon!

StoryWalk® is a free activity that is open to the public this fall at the library! Families are encouraged to combine physical activity with reading in an outdoor environment.

Read pages of a story as you stroll around the library, use your imagination to complete the activities and search for the next page in the story.

The first story will be We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, which will be posted outside at the library starting in late September.

Interlibrary Loans Are Back!

Interlibrary Loans (ILL) are back! Request to borrow a book that's not in our collection from another BC library.

*New Limit* Patrons may have 2 active interlibrary loans requests at any one time.

As always, the following restrictions apply to Interlibrary Loans:

  • Books published in the last 12 months, and audiovisual materials (e.g. DVD, CD) are not available for ILL
  • You must have a valid Bowen Library account to request an Interlibrary Loan. Request an account here.
  • ILL requests take 2-3 weeks to arrive at Bowen Library
  • There is a 1.00 charge for ILL requests that are cancelled or not picked up.
  • You will have the book for 3 weeks, but please note that renewals are often not possible with ILL's.

How do I request an Interlibrary Loan? Check our catalogue first, to see if we have the title. If not, request an ILL one of these ways:

Takeout is Now Regular Holds

Now that the library has reopened, our Takeout service has returned to being our normal holds service.

Put hold requests on books, DVDs, magazines, or medical equipment from the Bowen Library collection, then check out your requested items from our front desk during library open hours.

  1. Go to our catalogue and search for the items you want to borrow.
  2. Place a hold on each item you want to borrow.
  3. You will be notified when your hold is available, and you will have seven days to come to the library to pick it up.
  4. Come by the library and check out your items on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 12 pm and 3 pm.

Contactless pickup through Takeout Service is still available on request.

If you are not comfortable coming inside the library, please contact us to arrange for contactless pickup or delivery. If you are self-isolating or are feeling unwell, please contact us so we can prepare your items to be picked up by a friend or another family member. You can request specific available items, or we can choose a variety of books for at-home browsing. Contact the library by email at info@bowenlibrary.ca or call (604) 947-9788.

Find out about requesting medical equipment on our Med Shed page.
