Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez Receives Dean’s Award for Educational Leadership

Congratulations to our UBC Bachelor of Media Studies and UBC School of Information professor, Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez, who has been awarded the Dean’s Award for Educational Leadership projects this year!⁣ ⁣

Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez’s project focuses on developing an educational leadership methodology and instruments to work with faculty to conduct transformational audits of Indigenization & Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion of their course offerings. ⁣ ⁣

The Routledge Companion to Cult Cinema by Dr. Ernest Mathijs

Our UBC Bachelor of Media Studies and Film Studies professor, Dr. Ernest Mathijs, recently published the book, The Routledge Companion to Cult Cinema

The book gives an overview of cult cinema and addresses the topic outside of Western cinema and re-balances gender perspectives, drawing attention to women filmmakers and stars and stressing how non-normativity is key to understanding cult cinema.

ACA@UBC Panel Discussion: Documenting Injustice as it Unfolds

This panel discussion will focus on documenting injustice as it unfolds from the perspective of archivists, records managers, and memory workers. Consideration will be given to how the collection, preservation, and access of records related to injustice in its many forms impact such concerns as privacy, accountability, and trauma, as well as how an ethics of care may shape the future of a more informed and involved profession.

Shining A Light On Fading Ads

Sign up and attend the event "Shining A Light On Fading Ads," an illustrated talk presented by the Friends of The Vancouver City Archives!

This talk will illustrate a new augmented restoration project and technique invented by Portland-based light artist, Craig Winslow, coined by him as ‘Light Capsules’. Hear from Craig Winslow himself about his technique, his passion and some of his favourite completed projects around North America.

The Pender Guy Radio Collective, 1976-1981: The Reunion Show
May 29th, 2021, 12.00PM–1.30PM (PST)

The Pender Guy radio collective grew out of a wave of Chinese Canadian youth activism in the early 1970s and explored issues related to Chinese-Canadian identity, history, politics, and art. As part of this year's Literasian festival, members of the Pender Guy will share their memories on the show and play some of their favourite segments from the tapes.

MOA Shop Emerging Indigenous Artist Contest
Deadline: April 30th, 2021

Are you an emerging Indigenous artist, between 15 and 25 years old, with a story to tell? Submit a design that expresses your identity, and the MOA Shop will help share it with the world. The winning artwork will be printed on a t-shirt and sold and promoted exclusively through the MOA Shop for one year. The winner will receive both a $250 prize and royalties from every sale.

Apply for the BC Arts Council Scholarship
Deadline: April 30th, 2021

The BC Arts Council Scholarship Program supports the development of B.C.’s rich diversity of future artists and arts and cultural practitioners. Awards of up to $6,000 per year are available to B.C. residents to attend full-time post-secondary arts training or to pursue high school half-day dance programs.

Application Deadline: May 7th, 2021

If you are an upper-year undergraduate student (in your 3rd year or beyond) you are eligible to coordinate a Student Directed Seminar. UBC students can register in two Student Directed Seminars during their degree: once as Coordinator and once as a participant.

Together with Inspirit Foundation, Hot Docs is thrilled to announce the launch of a new year-round Podcast Development Lab serving BIPOC creators based in Canada.

Are you taking a course this summer? Term 1 Summer courses begin on May 10th, and the tuition and fee deadline for most faculties is May 12th. 

Last day to drop your courses without a W for Term 1 is May 14th. Last day to drop your courses with a W for Term 1 is June 4th.
