Mayor's Message

Mayor Steve Pellegrini

On behalf of King Township Council, welcome to the July edition of the King Bulletin.

Salamander Park survey

King Township is planning on adding a new feature to Salamander Park at 70 Tatton Court in King City. We'd like to know what the community would like to see installed. Please take a minute and complete the one-question survey at our online engagement platform SpeaKING and let us know your choice—a splash pad, a play structure or ball hockey.

The survey will remain open until July 15 and construction will begin later this year.

Sidewalkable Saturday

Join us on Saturday, July 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Schomberg's Sidewalkable Saturday. Schomberg Main Street businesses are bringing their stores to the sidewalk.

Come ready to shop, eat, drink and enjoy some fun activities. Main Street will be closed to traffic so pedestrians can easily get around. There will be sidewalk sales, food specials, music, local vendors and more. Experience all that Schomberg Main Street has to offer.

For more information visit Schombergmainstreet.ca/sidewalkable-saturdays.

Cold Creek disc golf course grand opening

The Township of King is excited to announce the introduction of an 18-hole disc golf course at Cold Creek Conservation Area. The grand opening will be held on Saturday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The course features a variety of holes ranging from forested to open grass prairies with varying elevation changes. To access, park in the Visitor Centre parking lot and begin the course behind the building. The final hole is located behind the Education Centre.

The Township of King worked collaboratively with the Ontario Disc Golf Association to design the course. In addition, King consulted with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to ensure minimal impact on the natural environment.

In 2022, the Township of King received a non-repayable contribution of nearly $100,000 from Central Counties Tourism to support King’s tourism assets and enhance the attractiveness of King as a destination for visitors. This investment was made through the Government of Canada’s Tourism Relief Fund, delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). Central Counties Tourism received $8.65 million from FedDev Ontario to help local tourism organizations and businesses safely welcome back visitors, recover from the impacts of the pandemic and prepare for future growth.

A portion of the funding that the Township received supported the installation of the disc golf course at the Cold Creek Conservation Area. This course will help draw new visitors to the area, and local businesses in King will benefit from increased activity at shops and restaurants, as a result.

This Government of Canada investment is helping the Township adapt and recover to bring visitors back and drive economic growth in King.

The course is free to use and is open and available for play. Please be aware that Cold Creek gates are open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Please continue to stay safe, volunteer and shop locally as much as you can.

Sincerely,

Mayor Steve Pellegrini

New turtle crossing signs installed in King

Signs have been installed around King to help alert motorists to keep an eye out for turtles crossing the road.

Transportation Services installed the signs at the beginning of May.

Nine signs have been installed on the 7th and 8th Concessions, the 15th and 19th Sideroads and Pumphouse Road.

Staff are prepared to add more signs as required.

Turtles are listed as a species of concern by both the provincial and federal governments.

King’s Township-Wide Recreation Centre takes shape at 15 Sideroad and Dufferin Street

The new Township-Wide Recreation Centre in King—a fully accessible recreation complex with a lap pool, ice surfaces, athletic fieldhouse and a multi-purpose room—is taking shape at the corner of 15th Sideroad and Dufferin Street.

The project scope of work, budget and schedule are all on track. The complex is scheduled to be completed in the summer/fall of 2024. To see the most current progress, visit king.ca/majorprojects.

Site activities now in progress include:

  • Site servicing
  • Pool construction
  • Rink construction
  • Structural steel fabrication and delivery
  • Mechanical rough-in of plumbing, HVAC, equipment and fixtures
  • Electrical rough-in of material, equipment and fixtures

Facts about the Township-Wide Recreation Centre

  • The centre is being built on 25 acres at the southeast corner of the King Campus of Seneca and will be accessible from 15th Sideroad.
  • Seneca and the Township have signed a 99-year lease agreement for the land.
  • In May 2021, the Government of Canada announced it is investing over $21.1 million in the Township of King’s Township-Wide Recreation Centre project through the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan. The Government of Ontario is providing over $17.6 million.
  • In June 2022, the Township approved a tender in the amount of $73.2 million from JR Certus Construction Co. Ltd. and a total project cost of $86 million to respond to rising inflation.
  • The approved budget is funded from municipal reserves. The Township is exploring opportunities to replenish the funds through channels that could include the sale of surplus lands, additional developer contributions and naming rights and sponsorship of the facility.
  • The multi-use fieldhouse could include future amenities such as baseball and soccer fields.
  • With the Township’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project is designed to open as a carbon-zero facility, which combined with the closure of the existing arena facility, accounts for a 10-per-cent or more reduction in GHG (greenhouse gas) output for the Township.

Clean Yards By-law 2016-68 sets out minimum standards for properties in the Township including some rules on litter, waste and property maintenance to help ensure that properties are safe, clean and attractive in relation to adjacent properties.

Reminder to Owners and Tenants:

  • All properties must be kept free and clear of long grass and weeds.
  • All properties are to be free of garbage, litter, yard waste, standing water, storage bins and demolition project material, and construction equipment.
  • All properties need to be clear of derelict vehicles, including vehicles that are not currently licensed for operation.

The Clean Yards By-law is the Township’s tool for addressing and responding to concerns about property maintenance. Bylaw Enforcement Officers work with property owners and tenants through education to achieve voluntary compliance, but alternatively orders may be issued to obtain compliance with the by-law standards.
