A Message From Our Director

Dear KIN Students,

It seems a long time ago when we transitioned to online learning and remote working in alignment with public health precautions in response to the pandemic. We all experienced disruption to our lives, and major adjustments to our work and studies. The challenges were different for many people across society including our students. Some had strong support networks and adjusted quite well, while others faced enormous obstacles, and sadly many lives have been lost not only here in BC, but across the country and globe. For students, completing the academic term required perseverance, patience, flexibility and fortitude. I commend all of you for your strength of character, the goodness of your spirit and actions as you supported friends, colleagues, family and neighbours along the way. Added to the pandemic, we have recently seen the terrible incidents that reveal the racism that still exists in society, and the public outcry here and across the globe that calls each of us to do our part to support and take action against racism and discrimination.

As we transition to the phased Restart Plan across the province and at UBC we can look constructively toward the future. In the near future, I look forward to celebrating Kinesiology graduates at the Virtual Spring Convocation taking place on June 17. In addition to the UBC-wide ceremony, we are also planning to send a virtual message to our inspiring KIN graduates. We wish our grads all the very best as they embark on their unique paths forward, develop their talents and pursue their dreams and avocations.

With the Fall academic term on the horizon, the School is in the planning phase to deliver all Fall term courses in an online format. Students do not necessarily need to be in Vancouver, BC, or Canada to start their first term of studies (September - December 2020). The School’s faculty and staff have been hard at work preparing online course modules with unique design features to ensure that the highest quality of online learning can be offered to new and returning students. The School’s faculty and staff are dedicated to maintaining excellence on all levels, from delivering the best curriculum possible to creating ways for meaningful engagement.

Over the next few months, we will continue to keep you informed of developments at UBC and at the School. We are already planning creative ways to meaningfully engage, inform and guide our students for the Fall term in the School of Kinesiology. While the university experience will be somewhat different, our goal is to ensure that students are supported and feel collectively part of our unique and enduring KIN culture. Rest assured that the School will be communicating with you in a clear and effective manner so that you know what to expect and how to plan for the upcoming academic year.

I wish each of you the best for the summer and look forward to welcoming you back in September.

SOME FELLOW GRADUATING KINNERS

Congratulations to the graduates of 2020! It has been an extremely challenging year as we face uncertainties during these times. However, do know the whole world is cheering you on as you graduate this spring.

Though we would have loved to profile all 276 students who are graduating, that would make for a very long newsletter! Instead, we hope that you see a bit of yourself in these 2 undergrad profiles.

Brandon Lam

Interdisciplinary Stream

"One of my biggest pieces of advice for first-year or transfer students would be to get involved! Whether it be with the KUS or any of the many other KIN opportunities, you never know who you'll meet or what could spark a new interest."

Brandon has taken on many roles including serving as VP Student Life of the KUS, as a team member of UBC Kin Games, and working as a Co-op student. He definitely took full advantage of the many different opportunities the School offers!

Arielle Sadaka

Interdisciplinary Stream

Arielle was a transfer student to KIN who recalls the journey of 'unfamilarity'. However, she says the fact that "Kinesiology is a smaller School rather than a larger faculty, allows individuals with similar interests to meet and learn together, creating a really great environment!"

We're sad to see the graduating class of 2020 go, and we imagine you're a bit sad too! As part of the KIN community, we hope your time here has been full of self-growth, meaningful memories and unbreakable friendships. But we hope you remember to stay kin-nected!

Milly Zaletelj

M.A. '19

Just 8 weeks into her new job at PARC, Milly moved quickly to ensure that the higher risk population of people with spinal injuries who utilize the gym facility continues to receive access to exercise classes and social supports. Milly and her team began to produce online exercise classes to maintain the health and wellness of participants as they social distanced. Moving to an online platform has allowed PARC members to preserve social connections, maintain positive mental health, and keep its community thriving during these challenging times.

BKin '14 Alum Evan Dunfee Confirms Spot for Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games

Alumnus Evan Dunfee (a KIN Community Champion) has been announced as one of the first three Olympic athletes representing Canada for the 2021 Olympic team!

Dunfee met the criteria for the 2020 Athletics team earlier this year, and for the 2021 Olympic games, the IOC and Athletics Canada chose to honour the spots for athletes who have already qualified. Dunfee qualified for the games as he bettered the Olympic 50K race walk standard of 3 hours and 50 min last spring in Japan by finishing one minute faster at 3 hours and 49 min. Dunfee previously participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics where he set the Canadian record for the 50km race coming in at 3:41:38 and placed 4th.

Congratulations to Dunfee, and all the best in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games!

Liam Foulger Places 3rd at MURC!

Congratulations to Liam Foulger (Fourth year, Health Sciences) for taking 3rd place in the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference poster presentation!

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 MURC was held online through Canvas from April 22-30 with a record number of 137 presentations by over 200 presenters. Liam presented on the “Effects of Gaze Direction on the Three-Dimensional Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex Evoked by Electrical Vestibular Stimulation”.

Well done Liam!

In Memoriam: Henrik Moberg Parker

The UBC School of Kinesiology has established an In Memoriam Fund in honour of Henrik Moberg Parker who sadly passed away much too young in February 2020.

Henrik was a clever, kind, and inclusive young man who was an excellent student, and a world-class sailing athlete. He planned on pursuing a career in physiotherapy. As a dedicated friend and an accomplished coach to others, Henrik demonstrated the characteristics of the kind of leader the School always hopes will emerge from its program.

We invite you to share your fond memories of Henrik in remembrance.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING FROM INDIGENOUS STUDIES IN KINESIOLOGY

Nothing About Us Without Us: Indigenous Engagement, Wellbeing, and Campus Recreation

Neither a global pandemic nor final exams could stop a group of ambitious Kinesiology undergraduate students from sharing an important message!

Students from KIN 489C Indigenous Studies in Kinesiology gave a Zoom presentation entitled “Nothing About Us Without Us”: Indigenous Engagement, Wellbeing and Campus Recreation. The presentation was intended as a knowledge mobilization initiative as students completed an environmental scan of policies and programs related to Indigenous recreation and wellbeing at UBC, and interviewed Indigenous staff and faculty for their perspectives on fostering Indigenous campus engagement.

Full Presentation

Lessons in Community from the Musqueam

"KIN 489B is a fascinating course because of its blended learning format. Students are encouraged to apply the theoretical knowledge learned in class to real-world issues facing Indigenous communities in the form of experiential learning placements."

Students in KIN 489B participated in community experiential learning where they worked with the Musqueam Indian Band community to assist in the development of a walk and run training program. In doing so, students learned the utmost importance in building a sense of community and incorporating a strengths-based approach. As historical, cultural, and traditional ways of knowing are strongly embedded in Indigenous values, using a strengths-based approach incorporates these aforementioned factors to promote culturally relevant and safe physical activity for Indigenous communities.
