McFarland Lumber Yard (1940-1942)

Behind the two children in this 1940s photo on Elizabeth Street is the McFarland Lumber Yard. It primarily provided materials for industries like the growing oil business in nearby Turner Valley. Early on in Okotoks' development, large industries and warehouse wholesalers were located in the downtown core.

Before modern zoning laws, it was common for these businesses to be clustered in downtown cores butting up against homes or businesses, such as hotels. For instance, in this photo we can see the Willingdon Hotel (today the Royal Duke) just beyond the lumber yard. Thanks to zoning, changing economic conditions and the availability of cars, these businesses moved further away from downtown to areas with more space, and neighbours were less likely to complain about noise or pollution.
