From the Cancer Care Center

At the IHC Cancer Care Centre, we provide patients with a uniquely comprehensive approach to quality of life. By combining evidence-informed naturopathic therapies with standard medical treatments for pain and symptom management, we offer care that stands apart. Whether you are coping with pain, nausea, or neuropathy, we are here to support you.

Understanding Palliative Care

Many people believe “palliative care” only means end-of-life care — but this is a misconception. The word comes from the Latin palliare, meaning “to cloak.” Palliative care is for anyone living with a serious illness. It focuses on relieving symptoms and improving quality of life, providing ongoing support as conditions and needs evolve.

Meet Dr. Kevin Sclater

Dr. Kevin Sclater is a family physician with over 25 years of experience in palliative medicine. He is certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada with an added competency in palliative care and previously by the American Board of Hospice & Palliative Medicine.Dr. Sclater has a growing interest in naturopathic treatments and now works collaboratively with Dr. Gurdev Parmar and the naturopathic doctors at IHC. Together, they bring patients an integrative oncology model — blending medical and naturopathic expertise to provide an extra layer of support for patients and families facing the challenges of cancer and other serious illnesses.

Who Benefits From Palliative Care?

A palliative consultation is recommended soon after a serious illness is diagnosed. This allows for a whole-person approach — physical, emotional, and spiritual — alongside cancer treatment or management of other conditions. Palliative doctors also provide expert care for the more difficult symptoms that can accompany advanced cancer and its therapies.

Access to Care

Dr. Sclater sees patients weekly on Tuesdays at our White Rock location. When referred by a family doctor or nurse practitioner, the consultation fee is covered by BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP).

Teaching and Leadership

Together, Dr. Parmar and Dr. Sclater teach doctors, nurses, and pharmacists a cutting-edge model of Integrative Palliative Care. As primary instructors of the Advanced Integrative Palliative Care Course, they have trained healthcare providers across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia.

Don’t Suffer Needlessly

If you or a loved one are living with a serious illness, know that expert and compassionate symptom management is available. At the IHC CCC, our goal is not only to treat illness, but to help you live well with it.

Additional CCC Feature

A past patient of Dr. Gurdev Parmar, ND has written a book on her healing journey, including treatments at IHC.

An Ocean Between the Waves: A Memoir of Integrative Healing

Salt Spring Island-based author and cancer survivor Terri Potratz has launched a Kickstarter campaign to publish her memoir about young-onset rectal cancer and the integrative approach that changed her trajectory.

Alongside chemoradiation, Terri incorporated mistletoe lectin injections, hyperthermia sessions, vitamin C IVs, meditation, cold plunges, and other complementary supports. She achieved a complete clinical response and was able to enter a trial for non-operative management — avoiding surgery and a permanent colostomy.

The Kickstarter runs until October 7 and will fund editing, design, and the first print run. Pledge now to support the project and receive early copies of the book — and see how an integrative approach to cancer, and to life, made all the difference.

A ketogenic diet may help preserve muscle mass and strength while on weight loss medications

GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs, such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), are highly effective for weight loss. A common side effect of weight loss is the loss of lean muscle mass along with fat. A recent study suggests that combining a ketogenic diet with these medications may help minimize muscle loss while maximizing fat loss.

In a 12-week pilot study, 60 overweight or obese participants were split into two groups. Both groups were given tirzepatide and consumed about 1,200 calories daily. One group followed a low-calorie diet (LCD), while the other followed a low-energy ketogenic therapy (LEKT), which limited carbohydrates to less than 30 grams per day.

Both groups lost a similar amount of weight. However, the breakdown of that weight loss revealed significant differences. The LEKT group lost more fat and significantly less lean muscle mass compared to the LCD group.

Additionally, the LCD group saw a decrease in their resting metabolic rate, which is heavily influenced by muscle mass. In contrast, the LEKT group's metabolic rate did not decrease.

While this non-randomized study is preliminary, the results are promising. They suggest that a ketogenic diet could be a valuable tool for those on GLP-1 drugs to improve body composition by preserving muscle mass and increasing fat loss.
