The Population Physical Activity Lab is recruiting research volunteers

How are you and your family coping with COVID-19? How are you staying active? Led by Dr. Guy Faulkner's Population Physical Activity Lab, UBC KIN researchers are recruiting participants for a study on physical activity & well-being during the pandemic.

Words of inspiration for the graduating Class of 2020

Due to COVID-19, traditional in-person graduation ceremonies will not take place this May. Instead, a virtual graduation ceremony will be held in early June. The School encourages KIN alumni to support new grads by sending words of wisdom, inspiration, and encouragement to the Class of 2020 during this challenging time.

We are all feeling the impact of COVID-19, including UBC students. Our students are now facing challenges that they could never have anticipated. Loss of part-time jobs, adjusting to online learning, and unplanned trips home.

Active Kids launches new virtual gymnastics classes

Are your kids at home and in need of some exercise? Active Kids Gymnastics is bringing its classic fun and high energy recreational gymnastics classes to your living room! All activities will be easy to follow along, require equipment commonly found in the house, and are designed to keep kids active and entertained while confined to the home during COVID-19. The first 2 sessions will be held on April 29th and May 2nd. More

 

KIN Community Champions

We are sourcing positive stories of resilience, support, ingenuity, and kindness to share with the School community during this COVID-19 health crisis. We have named this initiative “Kin Community Champions” and will include examples of this kind of leadership from the student and alumni body.

As a musician, Michael shows leadership and service by offering free, live online performances/jam sessions for all, to bring us together in a community and lift us up to overcome the challenges of social isolation during COVID-19. More

Dr. Rosalin Miles MHK 1998

Dr. Rosalin Miles models traditional Indigenous practices of health and wellbeing for herself, her family, her students and her community. She says: “The pandemic can provide us with opportunities to promote spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical wellness." More

Sunwon Jessica Kim, Paniz Shirkhanlou & Cierrah DiCesare

The 3 senior KIN students began a volunteer donation drive to source PPEs for women and children shelters. Their mission is to advocate for, and support those experiencing double disadvantages during this pandemic. More

 

Awards

Sara Hodson Selected Winner of '2020 Alumni Builder Award'

This Award recognizes outstanding individuals for their service, dedication, and contribution to the School of Kinesiology and the alumni community. Sara (BHK 2002) has consistently contributed to the School and its students in many areas, including her long-standing involvement in the Co-op and Mentorship Programs, as a keynote speaker, as an invaluable donor to the School, and as someone who has worked tirelessly with the School to forge external relations and promote its mission and goals.

UBC Sports Hall of Fame 2020 Inductions

Congratulations to School of Kinesiology (previously School of Physical Education) alumni and members of the 1975-1976 Men's Volleyball Team - Mervyn Mosher (BRE 1976), Tim Frick (BPE 1975, MEd 1980), and Wolfgang Neufeld (BPE 1975) - for their team's induction to the UBC Sports Hall of Fame. More

Congratulations also to Kin alum, Al Morrow (BPE 1979) for his induction in the 'Builder' category, to recognize his outstanding contribution to the sport of rowing as an athlete and a coach. More

Bruce and Patricia Kiloh Recipient of the 'Arthur W Delamont Award'

KIN alum Bruce Kiloh (BPE 1973) and Education alum Patricia Kiloh (BEd 1973, Dpl. Ed. 1999), who are longtime Thunderbirds supporters, received the Arthur W Delamont Award. Our hearty congratulations go out to them!

This award, commemorating the well-known Vancouver musician Arthur Delamont, is awarded to those emulating the perennial freshman spirit that was exhibited by this man, who for 40 years, was the leader of the University Pep Band. More

KIN Mentorship Program virtual wrap-up event

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the in-person wrap-up event for the School of Kinesiology’s Mentorship Program was cancelled. Instead, the School piloted a virtual online meet-up where 5 student mentees and 9 KIN alumni mentors participated. The attendees discussed pivots, and the different ways students and alumni have pivoted in their work, school and life and what new ideas and ways of doing things have been generated through the process.
