Food’s Future: Nature or Technology? — A Food Matters Presentation with Dr. Philip Gregory

Sunday, November 3 | 1:30 pm

Food insecurity is rising globally and across Canada. Are we looking in the right places for solutions to current and future food crises? Our current agriculture system is an industrial model: it’s unhealthy and unsustainable. Regenerative organic agriculture mimics nature to grow crops and raise animals. It’s a healthy, profitable, and sustainable method that mimics nature. Humans need to respect nature’s 4.5 billion years of research and development. We ignore nature’s lessons at our peril.

Dr. Phil Gregory is Professor Emeritus of Physics & Astronomy at UBC. Seven years ago, he refocused his research to what is necessary to sustain human life on earth in the face of climate change, the looming collapse of agriculture, and an explosion of chronic diseases.

This event is part of the Food Matters series, featuring four Bowen Island presenters. This series is presented in partnership by Bowen Island Food Resilience Society & Bowen Island Public Library.

Making the Canada Food Guide: Behind the Scenes — A Food Matters Presentation with Dr. Hasan Hutchison

Sunday, November 17 | 1:30 pm

Canada’s first ‘Official Food Rules’ (1942) recommended that all Canadians drink milk and eat a serving of potatoes daily. Over the years, Canada’s food guides have reflected the science and society of their times. Today’s ‘Canada’s Food Guide’ recommends water as the drink of choice and encourages us to be wary of food marketing and to eat without distractions. Dr. Hutchison, former federal Director General, Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion, will talk about the behind-the-scenes pressures, difficulties and science in the making of the current Canada’s Food Guide.

As Director General of the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion at Health Canada for over a decade until his retirement in 2019, Dr. Hutchinson’s had a leadership role in many important public health nutrition initiatives.

This event is part of the Food Matters series, featuring four Bowen Island presenters. This series is presented in partnership by Bowen Island Food Resilience Society & Bowen Island Public Library.

9-8-8 suicide crisis helpline, a hand offering a heart to another hand, text: you're not alone

9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline

New Canada-wide Helpline: Help when you need it most

If you are feeling like you have lost hope and are struggling to cope, if you are dealing with thoughts of suicide, or if you are worried about someone else, 9-8-8 is here for you.

When you reach out, a trained responder will listen without judgement, provide support and understanding, and can tell you about resources that will help.

9-8-8 is here to provide moments of connection that create hope, support recovery and save lives. This service helps people connect to their strengths and find new ways to cope, live and thrive. Their vision is a Canada where suicide is prevented because everyone can access help when they need it the most.

How 9-8-8 works

9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline follows a network model.

When you call or text 9-8-8, you will reach a responder at one of nearly 40 local, provincial and territorial, and national crisis lines, who co-deliver the service.

9-8-8 Partners are the backbone of the service. They are located across Canada. They provide existing crisis services within their communities, as well as taking 9-8-8 calls and texts. They are here to make sure that you can connect to a responder within your local community. Other 9-8-8 partners include Hope for Wellness who offer specialized support for First Nations, Inuit and Métis, and Kids Help Phone, who specialize in supporting young people reaching out to 9-8-8.
