Dyeing frenzy

Polychrome polypore

Some mushrooms contain colored pigments that will make your woolen garments dazzling. When out hiking, you often come across the velvet-top fungus (Phaeolus schweinitzii): indigestible like most polypores, it nevertheless has another interesting feature: for this reason, it is nicknamed the dyers' polypore. And rightly so, judging by what Benthe and Saskia, a mother and daughter who were visiting recently, have made of it.

The Gijzels are part of a European group of accomplished dyers. Delighted, they returned to Holland with a batch of lobster mushrooms (Hypomyces lactifluorum): this species, which cannot be found in Europe, is highly prized for the astonishing range of colors it produces, from yellows to reds and mauves.

A reference book, Mushroom Color Atlas, offers a kaleidoscope of shades that can be achieved with each species and the corresponding instructions.
