Hydrant flushing

Hydrant flushing starts this week in Nobleton

King Township hydrant flushing starts this week in Nobleton, followed by King City, Schomberg and Ansnorveldt throughout the month of May. Flushing is a preventative maintenance process that improves water quality by clearing sediment buildup in water distribution system piping. The process does not affect the safety of your water.

While flushing is occurring in your area, you may experience low pressure and/or discolouration. Low-pressure will be resolved immediately after flushing is complete. To correct any water discolouration, run your cold water tap until water clarity returns.

Free mulch

Free mulch giveaway at Cold Creek Conservation Area

Hoping for sunshine this weekend so you can work on your garden? Pick up some free mulch at Cold Creek Conservation Area in Nobleton.

Stop by the Visitor Centre parking lot between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. any day of the week until the fall. Residents are required to bring their own shovels and load the mulch themselves.

Mulch is great for retaining moisture in the soil, suppressing weeds and improving the overall health of your garden. It also helps regulate soil temperature and prevents soil erosion.

Clean Yards

Keep King clean by keeping your yard tidy

Warmer weather means it's time to tidy up! King's Clean Yards By-law sets standards for property maintenance, including litter and waste. Regularly mow your lawn and trim weeds to keep your summer property looking neat. Grass clippings should not be blown onto the road or placed in yard waste bags. They can be recycled on your lawn!

To file a complaint or get tips for keeping your yard clean, visit king.ca/cleanyards.

Yard sale

Community Yard Sale and e-Waste Reccycling Event happens May 3

A bargain-hunter’s dream come true, so many deals in one spot! Stop by the Community Yard Sale on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Trisan Centre in Schomberg to shop for some hidden treasures.

Do you have old electronics collecting dust at home? e-waste (e.g., TVs, computers, cameras, video game consoles, printers, and DVD players) are not collected through regular curbside pick-up and do not belong in the garbage or blue box.

Dispose your unwanted electronics responsibly for FREE at the e-Waste Recycling event, running outside in the parking lot of the Trisan Centre at the same time.

Marsh Mash

Celebrate the Holland Marsh's 100 anniversary at Marsh Mash

The annual Marsh Mash, known as the 4th oldest Marathon Canoe Race in Ontario, will kick off this year’s 100th anniversary of the Holland Marsh.

The event will take place in Bradford West Gwillimbury on Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the Sovereign Grace Church and is expected to attract canoeists, kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders and outrigger paddlers from all over the province. The race offers a variety of classes and race distances, with the Canal surrounding Holland Marsh providing one of Ontario's best canoe racing courses.

In addition to being a significant sporting event, this year’s Marsh Mash will serve as the official kick-off for celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Holland Marsh. Over several months following this event, Bradford will continue recognizing this milestone through various town events.

Transportation Master Plan

Help create the vision for a multi-modal transportation system

As part of updating the Township's 2020 Transportation Master Plan, we invite you to share your thoughts in developing the alternative solutions for the future transportation network. This includes whether there are solutions that address your challenges with getting around King Township, or if there are still gaps that need to be filled. Your feedback is crucial in helping us create a more efficient and effective transportation system.

Bylaws

King encourages responsible pet ownership and vehicle use

Off-road vehicles

Riding an off-road vehicle on any roads or parks within King Township, as well as throughout York Region, is prohibited and poses a danger to neighbours – particularly children playing on sidewalks or riding bicycles.

This includes pocket bikes, dirt bikes, mini-bikes, ATVs and motorized scooters, which are not allowed on public roadways or sidewalks. Failure to comply with the bylaw can result in your vehicle being impounded or a fine of up to $5,000. Residents are encouraged to use the online Road Watch Program to report those riding these vehicles illegally at yrp.ca

Pet owner responsibilities

Having a pet as part of your family is rewarding, but it comes with many responsibilities – including keeping them on a leash and cleaning up after them when you are out for a walk. It’s the responsibility of every pet owner to keep their pet (and neighbours) safe by abiding by the rules found in King Township’s Animal Control Bylaw #2016-85. The fine for having a dog off leash anywhere outside of an off-leash dog park is $360. The fine for not picking up after your pet is $200.

Cleaning up after your pet when you are out for a walk is the neighbourly thing to do. There are also many health considerations: excrement may contain bacteria and parasites that can be transmitted to other pets and humans, and even attract wildlife, such as coyotes. As part of an ongoing partnership with Vaughan Animal Services, officers routinely patrol King Township parks, municipal roadways and sidewalks for animal control issues, including those relating to stoop and scoop offences. The fine for failing to pick up after your pet in King Township is $200.

Age-Friendly Survey

Help shape King Township's age-friendly future: take our survey!

Older adults represent the fastest-growing population segment in Canada. In King Township, the 55+ population has been increasing significantly and is expected to continue at a rapid pace over the next decade.

To support the needs of an ageing population (and ageing in place) King Township is developing an Age-Friendly Action Plan in its commitment to become an Age-Friendly Community, where residents can maintain their independence as they age. This will ensure that programs and services in King Township are flexible and responsive to the needs of the aging population, and that older adults ages 55 plus have access to programs, along with facilities and infrastructure, they require to stay active, healthy and engaged in the local community.

To help us get started on our Plan, the Township is asking residents to provide their feedback on aging gracefully in King Township by taking a quick online survey.

Take the survey by July 25 at king.ca/seniors
