THE RANKIN REPORT

The Importance of Emergency Preparedness

Dear Timberlea-Prospect Residents,

We have entered the peak season of wildfires, extreme heat, and dry weather conditions. Last year’s devastating wildfires on the peripheral of our riding serves as a stark reminder of the effects of climate change and the importance of following the burn ban regulations and working together to mitigate potential fire hazards.

Last month the residents in Lake of Woods (LOW) and Cambrian’s Cove Subdivisions in Hubley organized a joint Community Wildfire Preparedness Day through the support of FireSmart Canada. The goal of the community was to remove the wildfire fuel (dead trees, brush, and debris) to reduce the risk of fire, and to take proactive initiatives in protecting lives and properties.

Mitchell Bell, a resident of LOW donated the use of his dump truck that hauled away three loads of debris. With the aid of over twenty-five volunteers, another 18 loads of utility trailer debris were donated to Kynock where it can be utilized for other purposes.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the leadership and logistical management that Chris Richards and Veronica Stinson provided to organize this event and the many volunteers that showed up to make it happen.

Although this community event was a tremendous success, there is still work to be done for these communities and many others in Timberlea-Prospect that need emergency egresses.

This work will require the cooperation of the municipal and provincial governments.
I am committed to supporting our communities to achieve this endeavor and I am pleased to share the Hon. Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables response to my email of April 26, 2024, regarding the need for emergency egress.

Initiating the process for an emergency egress begins with the municipality and I’m pleased the Minister, and his departmental staff are ready and committed to collaborating with HRM to provide crown land where possible for emergency exits.
The Lake of the Woods/ Cambrian’s Cove fire safety prevention event caught my attention and admiration and is an excellent example of the quality and spirit within our communities.

This turnout resulted in fire prevention measures, enhanced the neighbourhood with a great beautification project, and showcased volunteerism at its very best.
A special shout out to all the youth who came out to support their parents and community!

Sincerely,

Iain Rankin

Prospect Road Traffic Impact Study

I recently had the opportunity to check-in with the Public Works team to ask about the study I secured recently. The objecting is to evaluate current and future transportation demands, identify potential new roads connections, and assess the impact of new developments, such as Ragged Lake Industrial Park and Halifax Exhibition Centre’s redevelopment. This study will analysis existing traffic patterns, evaluate, and propose mitigations for safety concerns, forecast future travel needs, and identify transportation upgrades to support ongoing traffic demands and future development.

This assessment will guide necessary multi-modal upgrades and alternate emergency routes with the latest data and projections. The NSDPW have hired CBCL consultants to conduct this comprehensive study for an agreed amount of $100,000.

This project is a collaborative effort organized by Public Works, Municipal Affairs and Housing, Halifax, and the Joint Regional Transportation Agency. CBCL are planning to have a draft report of their findings for review by Fall 2024.

Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies can happen at any time and without warning. As numerous communities across the province experienced over the past year, it's important to be ready. With a little preparation, you can respond quickly to help yourself and others.

Understanding the risks in our area, creating a household emergency plan, and building an emergency kit are some of the steps you can take to be prepared.

I’ve gathered some tips for everyone to use as a guide for information on what to do in the different situations we could face across our province.
