ISLAND HEALTH LTC CONTRACTS NOW AVAILABLE

Island Health is now offering individual and group contract opportunities for physicians providing care in LTC settings. The contracts are part of an Alternative Payment Arrangement (APP) model and aim to support consistent, team-based care through stable, predictable compensation. Physicians can participate individually or as part of a group, with contract hours estimated based on resident needs and complexity. NATIONAL INDIGENOUS HISTORY MONTH 2025

Some of the topics below may be distressing for readers. If you need support, The First Nations Health Authority provides culturally safe and trauma-informed mental health services within BC.

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada - a time to reflect on and honour the stories, achievements, resilience, and beauty of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial. Many Indigenous groups also celebrate their heritage around June 21, the summer solstice, now recognized as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

One way to honour this month is to engage with Indigenous stories - through books, music, filmart, and dance. Canadians are also encouraged to learn about residential schools, the ongoing impacts of violence against Indigenous women and girls, and the importance of truth and reconciliation. By engaging with Indigenous voices, histories, and communities, as well as supporting Indigenous-owned businesses and initiatives, we take meaningful steps toward reconciliation.

NEW ALLIED HEALTH CENTRE SUPPORTS TEAM-BASED CARE

On April 24, the Victoria Primary Care Network Allied Health Centre officially opened, offering integrated support from clinical pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, nurses, and mental health and substance use consultants - all in one purpose-built location at 1025 Johnson Street. Replacing its former site on Yates Street, the centre aims to improve coordination and efficiency in care delivery while easing the workload of family physicians. B.C. Premier David Eby and Health Minister Josie Osborne praised the centre as a model for the future; Family Physician Dr. Melissa Duff, board chair of the Division of Family Practice noted, “this is more than just a building - it’s a game-changer. It secures and expands access to culturally sensitive, patient-centered, team-based care for years to come.”

If you enjoy caring for residents, we encourage you to talk to your peers about the flexibility, meaningful patient relationships, and professional fulfillment that LTC offers.
