Faculty of Medicine:

We are delighted to welcome Asmae (pronounced Ess-maa) El-Bouhali as our new embedded counsellor, specifically available to support research graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine! Starting October 13, Asmae will be available Mondays and Wednesdays, with some virtual appointments on Thursday afternoons.

Asmae is a clinical counsellor with graduate degrees in Counselling Psychology and Human Development from the University of Ottawa and the University of British Columbia. She is available for single-session appointments, wellness advising, or short-term individual counselling, depending on a student’s needs.

How can I make an appointment with Asmae?

Phone UBC Counselling Services at 604-822-3811, specify that you are a research graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine, and request an appointment with Asmae (keeping in mind her general availability of Mondays and Wednesdays). As a Faculty of Medicine grad student, you have the choice of requesting to see Asmae or accessing another type of Counselling Services appointment, such as a same-day, single-session appointment or Wellness Advising appointment.

For now, Asmae will be working out of Brock Hall on the Point Grey Campus; she can see students in-person at Point Grey or via video/telephone sessions. We are in the process of arranging for Asmae to offer some appointments on-site at our hospital campuses in the coming months.

If you have additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Graduate & Postdoctoral Wellbeing Support Coordinator via med.research@ubc.ca.

Entrepreneurship UBC Newsletter

Dear UBC Pathology faculty and trainees,

I hope many of you enjoyed Robyn Campol’s PALS talk on respectful and inclusive learning environments. In case you weren’t able to attend, I wanted to make sure you all are aware of the UBC Office of Respectful Environment, Equity, & Inclusion (REDI). Here is the UBC REDI website, which Robyn mentioned has plenty of information and tools available: https://redi.med.ubc.ca/

As was discussed in the session, REDI provides an online portal through which learners can safely report mistreatment, either completely anonymously or confidentially. If you choose to report confidentially, your personal information will be kept confidential and Robyn will follow up with you to discuss the incident further and work with you to decide what (if anything) you’d like to do about it. The portal is a safe space designed to protect the learner’s rights and safety. Here is the link for mistreatment reporting: https://mistreatmenthelp.med.ubc.ca/

Let’s all do our part to ensure our teaching environments are respectful and supportive!

Thanks everyone,

Tyler
