A public health companion for ASHRAE Guideline 44: Protecting building occupants from smoke during wildfire and prescribed burn events’

This NCCEH companion guide to ASHRAE 44 aims to support public health practitioners and allied professionals to better understand the factors that affect indoor air quality during wildfires or prescribed burns. It summarizes the key messages from ASHRAE Guideline 44 and outlines the key steps in developing a building-specific smoke-readiness plan (SRP).

Wildfire smoke and portable air cleaners: Improving air quality in schools and child care facilities

In 2025 so far, wildfires in Canada have burned an area about the size of New Brunswick, creating extensive smoke plumes that can harm health and learning, especially for children. This blog outlines the wildfire smoke risks to children's health and its impact on education, and presents best practices for using commercial and DIY portable air cleaners to reduce indoor exposure in schools and childcare settings.

CoastAdapt is seeking input to strengthen Canada’s coastal resilience

Help shape CoastAdapt, a new initiative that will develop a Canada-wide resource to help communities learn about and make informed decisions on how to live with, and prepare for, changes along the coast.  The goal is to help communities quickly pinpoint the information they need; especially region-specific guidance that reflects the challenges faced on the ground. Scaling up health adaptation measures to meet the climate change challenge in the Americas
Free certificate-based course

Hosted by the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education (GCCHE), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), EarthMedic and EarthNurse Foundation for Planetary Health, and Health Canada, this bi-weekly 11-session course is designed to equip health professionals, federal, regional and local health systems planners, hospital administrators, emergency planners, sustainability officers, public health officials, and others with the knowledge and tools needed to rapidly scale-up adaptation, mitigation, and resilience efforts to prepare health systems for climate change.

Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays - September 25 - October 30, 2025
Schedule: 14:00 Uruguay / 13:00 La Paz
Duration: 11 sessions
Certificate: Available to those who complete at least 7 sessions and pass the final exam
Language: Course delivered in English with materials and simultaneous translation in French, Spanish, and Portuguese
