The Conservation Officer Service (COS) is receiving reports of bear activity in Squamish and surrounding areas.

With warmer weather bringing more people outdoors, the COS would like to remind residents and visitors to be familiar with safety precautions in case of wildlife encounters.

EXTRA VIGILANCE NEEDED

Squamish is bear country, and bear sightings in nature are common.

When biking, hiking or recreating in bear country, remember to be aware of your surroundings. What you can do:

  • Carry bear spray.
  • Travel in groups and make noise to avoid surprising a bear.
  • Leash dogs at all times - bears can see dogs as threats, and off-leash dogs may provoke a response.
  • Use extra caution in areas where bears commonly are, such as near berry bushes or streams.

When at home or at work, the COS encourages residents and businesses to:

  • Look around their properties and securely store attractants to prevent bears and other wildlife from accessing them.
  • Keep bird feeders out of a bear's reach and clean any fallen seeds.
  • Keep barbecues clean and secure.
  • Pick fruit from trees and off the ground—don’t give bears an opportunity to stay in the community and create a public safety risk.

EVERYONE CAN HELP MAKE THE COMMUNITY SAFE

Securing attractants is the best way to help keep people, and bears, safe. We ask everyone to do their part to keep wildlife wild. Learn more about living with wildlife at squamish.ca/wildlife.

View the District's Wildlife Attractant Bylaw here. Offenses such as failure to lock or replace damaged totes, and failure to manage attractants may be subject to fines of up to $230 under the District's Municipal Ticket Information Bylaw (schedule “AC”, page 38)

Please continue to report any wildlife sightings or encounters to the Conservation Officer Service Hotline at 1.877.952.7277.
