Read on for more! | Recycling Right This Holiday Season This year, let's reduce waste and choose decorations, cards and gifts that have less of an environmental impact. When decorating, use popcorn, cranberries and dried oranges instead of plastic garland and tinsel. Consider swapping holiday cards for e-cards and giving an experience instead of a thing! We realize that some gifts will be given, but if you use 100 percent paper wrapping, skip the plastic bows and make sure items end up in the right cart, it will make a huge difference. If you don't know which cart something should be put in, please use the handy What Goes Where tool. | Meal Prep & Planning - Meal plan and stick to your list.
- Don't overserve and have a plan on how to recreate a new meal with leftovers.
- Ask guests to bring reusable containers to take home their favourite leftovers.
- A reminder that all plastic cutlery (regular, compostable and bio-degradable) go into BLACK carts.

- Wrapping paper, bows, cards and tissue paper made of paper can be recycled and placed in your BLUE cart.
- Try to remove as much tape as possible.
- Please remove any electronic parts (which can be recycled at the nearest battery depot).
- Store reusable bags to use next year.
- Save old cards to use for crafts.

The City of Nanaimo is seeking submissions from Vancouver Island youth artists (ages 13 - 20) for an artistic design that will be used to celebrate and share information about the City’s Youth Lounge. Up-to-date information on City construction projects: Midtown Water Supply and Midtown Gateway Projects - East Wellington Road from Westwood Road to Bowen Road will be paved on Tuesday, December 12.
- The road is open to two way traffic with intermittent traffic disruptions as required for construction, expect delays and watch for signage. This is an active construction site from 7 am – 7 pm. Speed limit is 30km/h. The area is open to cyclists and pedestrians during this time. Cyclists are encouraged to dismount and walk. Watch for sidewalk closures and detours, and communicate with traffic control personnel onsite.
- Within Beban Park near the main south entrance, construction of a valve station will be occurring with intermittent traffic disruptions within the park. Access to and from the Beban Heritage House and Centennial Building will be from the access closest to the buildings, the access nearest to the south main entrance is closed to construction. All businesses and parking lots remain open and accessible.
- The Parkway Trail Parking Lot at Westwood Road and East Wellington Road is closed to the public. The Parkway Trail is still accessible.
- The trail that connects VIU, the Black Diamond neighbourhood and Third Street is closed to the public. This area is an active construction site for the installation of the water supply main. Construction traffic will enter and exit the work zone at Third Street across from the Rotary Field House.
- Along the Parkway visual distractions of the project construction will be noticeable at College Drive, behind VIU as well as south of East Wellington Road.
- Commuters can expect minor delays along many streets in the City while the construction crews progress on this project. The construction will create visual distractions and minor delays for commuters. Drivers, pay close attention to signage and the construction traffic as they enter and exit these sections of the project:
- Griffiths Road, end to Madsen Road
- Madsen Road, Griffiths/Boxwood to East Wellington
- Third Street across from the Rotary Fieldhouse
- College Drive at the Parkway (HWY19)

- The mid-block crosswalk at Gordon Street is closed until the installation of the new signals, expected late this year:

- Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
