Dear members, dear partners,

The U.S. government recently announced a new 10% tariff on aluminum imports from Canada. In response to this trade offensive, the Canadian government has positioned itself on possible countermeasures taxing many consumer goods from the United States.

As you can see, we are getting dangerously close to the trade dispute that had already impacted our industry in 2018.

At that time, we demonstrated that our geographic proximity allowed for good cooperation among our companies and that an aircraft component could cross the border between our two countries several times. Knowing that aluminum can make up to 80% of the weight of an aircraft, these tariff barriers on aluminum penalized companies on both sides of the border.

In the exceptional context of a pandemic, industry players agree that the return of these measures adds considerable pressure on an already very weakened industry. In the Greater Montréal area, more than 200 companies in the aerospace sector could be affected. These disruptions to cross-border flows could force our companies to maintain inventories, resulting in additional costs. In the long term, this situation could prompt our companies to review their location and lead to the exodus of the talent that is now the driving force of our industry. It is therefore imperative to act quickly.

More than ever, in these difficult times, Aéro Montréal is working hard to represent the interests of its members to find solutions. To help us obtain a full picture of the impact on the industry, we invite you to fill out this brief survey.

Rest assured that Aéro Montréal is continuing to mobilize for the benefit of the industry,

The summer season traditionally features our annual networking event: the Golf Classic. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to reconsider holding such an event this year. After an exhaustive evaluation of the health measures that would have to be put in place to ensure the safety of our participants, it is clear that we are not able to achieve our goal of fostering networking and strengthening business relationships. Until now, the golf classic has been a unique opportunity to bring together the key players in our industry for a friendly gathering and we hope that this annual event will remain a great experience that meets your expectations. We look forward to seeing you again in large numbers in the summer of 2021!

Maiden flight of the Boeing 777-9

The first flight of the "triple-seven"-9 can be described as lightning in the middle of a thunderstorm... a little behind schedule. One of the Seattle-based manufacturer's best-sellers has lost a few orders, but the giant is flying no matter what.

Diversity and inclusion have been hot topics these past few years, and Canada has been a world leader on the subject. Recent studies have shown that innovation, efficient problem solving and greater creativity are just a few of the benefits of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. But there’s more. These benefits confer a competitive advantage and lead to higher profit margins. One study, the McKinsey Global Institute’s 2017 report, states that implementing gender equity measures could add $150 billion to Canada’s GDP in 2026. From a legal perspective, what obligations do employers in Quebec have in terms of inclusion and diversity?
