Mayor's Message

Mayor Steve Pellegrini

On behalf of King Township Council, welcome to the January edition of the King Bulletin.

I hope you and yours had a safe, restful holiday season and wish you all the best in the New Year.

2024 municipal budget

As we embarked on the budget process last month, Council and staff were united in our goal—to continue delivering the programs and services King’s residents expect and deserve while recognizing the ongoing challenges taxpayers face as inflation remains high.

With fiscal responsibility top of mind, the King team presented a blended rate of 3.54 per cent—which includes the Township, York Region and the school boards—and is less than the increased cost of living. We have many things to be proud of in this budget, including significant investments in infrastructure, which will ensure that the quality of life in beautiful King remains great.

King continues to have one of the lowest average tax increases of Greater Toronto Area (GTA) municipalities. The average increase for the Township portion of municipal tax is 2.64 per cent over the past five years, which is below the current rate of inflation.

The Township portion of King’s annual property tax funds operating budgets to provide current service levels, programs, and services as well as capital infrastructure. This includes snow removal from roads and sidewalks, road and bridge repairs and maintenance, fire and emergency services, parks, arenas, facilities and library branches.

These capital projects are in addition to term of Council projects that will continue into 2024, including: $2.1 million for the reconstruction of Kettleby Road; funding the $86-million Township-Wide Recreation Centre; $9.7 million for the reconstruction of 15th Sideroad to Highway 27 and 10th Concession; and, $4.2 million for the Nobleton Revitalization Strategy with park enhancements.

I want to thank Council and staff for their hard work in keeping the budget as low as possible while continuing to offer excellent programs and services.

Village urban design guidelines

New village urban design guidelines

New urban design guidelines were adopted for the villages of King City, Nobleton and Schomberg at the Dec. 11 Council meeting. The guidelines focus on the village centres, established neighbourhoods and employment areas within each of the villages.

The new Village Urban Design Guidelines are a series of statements and images that outline the types of design elements and features that will shape new development in King. Urban design is informed by a variety of disciplines including architecture, land use planning, landscape architecture and engineering. Building orientation and siting, streetscape design, built form massing and special locations in King can all be addressed through the guidelines.

The guidelines work in conjunction with other Township plans, by-laws and guidelines to support the Township’s urban design objectives. These guidelines will be implemented through the review of various tools and applications under the Planning Act, including applications for Official Plan amendments, zoning by-law amendments, draft plan of subdivision and condominium applications, consent applications and minor variance applications. To review the guidelines, visit the SpeaKING project page.

Christmas tree pickup

Christmas trees will be picked up on the weeks of Jan. 8 and Jan. 15. Please remove all decorations, nails, tree stands and plastic tree bags. Crews will not dig out a tree or climb a snowbank to retrieve one and trees over six feet tall in height must be cut into pieces.

2024 Waste Calendar

2024 Waste and Recycling Calendar

King Township's newly designed 2024 Waste and Recycling Calendar is now available online at king.ca/waste and was delivered last month to all households in King.

The new one-page flyer replaces the previous multi-page booklet. The new format has been adopted by all municipalities within York Region to cut production costs and reduce the amount of paper waste. The reader-friendly calendar contains all the key information residents need to know about waste and recycling collection.
