COMING UP AT COUNCIL

SNOW AND ICE CONTROL UPDATES

In response to public safety concerns experienced during the snow and ice storm events of December 2021 and January 2022, the District of Squamish has implemented winter parking regulations on some streets in Squamish. Parking is restricted to one side of the street during winter months to ensure that snowplows and emergency vehicles can maintain access. No Parking signage has been installed in designated areas and restrictions will be in effect through March 1. With snow in the forecast once again, we are asking residents to avoid parking in No Parking areas and make use of garages and driveways where possible to create additional parking spaces.

MAMQUAM ROAD SEWER PROJECT DELAYED

The project to upgrade the main sewer line under Highway 99 connecting both sides of Mamquam Road has been delayed again due to new complications of installing the new pipe under the highway. While the District and its contractor hoped to use a trenchless method to minimize traffic disruption, efforts to go this route have failed. Project completion will now require a traditional trench dig across Highway 99 in coordination with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

The project did progress to complete 50% of the main sewer replacement between Diamond Head Road and Highway 99.

ZERO WASTE HOLIDAYS

Are you feeling the holiday spirit? Make this holiday season one that is not only joyful but also sustainable. Holidays often come with large amounts of avoidable waste which can be easily reduced by considering some zero-waste ideas. Instead of using wrapping paper, which will inevitably end up as garbage, consider using brown paper bags which can be composted, or add a dish towel to the present and use it as packaging. Old newspapers also make for nice wrapping. Think circular and consider purchasing pre-owned items as presents. Or gift experiences, homemade crafts, and food, over new items.
