National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Commemoration: Honouring Our Children and Survivors

The Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) invites everyone to gather as a community to honour, remember and pay respect to the Survivors of Residential School and those who never made it home. The gathering will also celebrate the resilience of Indigenous Peoples, and the resurgence and reclamation of their ancestral teachings.

Meet at the corner of Winnipeg Street and Cleveland Avenue. The procession to U Siyam Pavilion will begin at 1 p.m.

An afternoon program of Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw speakers, drummers and singers will follow. Orange shirts are encouraged.

A wealth of resources about Truth and Reconciliation and the impact of colonization on Indigenous communities are available at the Squamish Public Library.

COMMUNITY INVITED TO BLESSING CEREMONY

The community is invited to a Ceremony for the ORANGE SHIRTS art installation by Xwalacktun, Squamish Nation Artist. This event will take place on Friday, September 30 at 5 p.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre (1009 Centennial Way) to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The next District of Squamish municipal election is set for Saturday, October 15. Squamish residents will vote for one (1) Mayor and six (6) Councillors.

Squamish Helping Hands: Call for volunteers 

Squamish Helping Hands is looking for volunteers who want to share their personal skills and interests with others at Under One Roof. This includes activities such as art, music, philosophy, bike maintenance, nature walks etc. All and any ideas welcome from Squamish residents. Squamish Helping Hands supports its volunteers by organizing activities and engaging interested residents of Under One Roof to participate. Speak to staff about available grant-funding.

Squamish Fire Rescue Open House

The annual Squamish Fire Rescue Open House is back on Sunday, October 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new Fire Hall, 37890 Clarke Drive. 

Try on actual firefighting gear, view the latest emergency vehicles while learning about fire escape plans and more at this popular all-ages event. Plus, you’ll get to meet some of the people who work together to keep our community safe. Bring the whole family for a free day of fire safety fun. All are welcome to attend!

Tote exchange

Are you interested in a larger or smaller garbage tote? The deadline to request to change your garbage tote size for 2023 is September 30. Solid Waste Utility fees will vary based on the garbage tote size you choose. A $50 exchange fee will apply.

Please note ninety-five gallon totes are no longer being offered. If you require a larger garbage tote than the Medium tote size (the size of your recycling tote), please email or call 604.815.5057.

Transit Pass promotion

The District of Squamish is offering the following fare discounts:

  • 50% off student/senior and adult monthly passes for the months of September, October, November and December
  • 50% off transit fares paid on the bus from September through December (single rides will be $1 rather than $2; day tickets will be $2 rather than $4)

Transit fares will return to regular pricing in January 2023.

Mamquam Road Sewer Upgrades

The Mamquam Road sewer upgrade project is underway and will continue through December.

Impacts: Mamquam Road will remain open to traffic to Highway 99, however it is possible that the westbound lane (access off Highway 99 toward Government Road) may be closed if more construction space is needed. Construction noise will be limited to hours permitted under the Noise Bylaw. 

 

Read Crescent Watermain

Watermain replacement and sanitary sewer upgrades will take place along Read Crescent and Read Place. Read Crescent will be fully repaved spring 2023.

Impacts: Expect single lane alternating traffic and delays.

Timeframe: Through November.

 

Pioneer Way/Queens Way intersection upgrades

Improvements to the east side of the Pioneer Way/ Queens Way intersection are currently underway. Improvements include paving, curb and sidewalk, multi-use pathway and lighting.

Impacts: Expect single-lane traffic on Queens Way.

Timeframe: Through early November.

Thursdays, October 13 - December 1

This class is designed for people 55y+ with some experience speaking French and who wish to refresh their ability. The group discusses an array of topics and weekly homework is provided. Please note that this is not a beginner course and that the entire class is conducted in French.

Truth & Reconciliation Book Giveaway

September 30, 12:30 - 4 p.m.

The Squamish Library will be joining the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Commemoration held at U Siyam Pavilion (37950 Cleveland Ave, Squamish) on Friday, September 30 from 12:30 – 4 pm.

A book giveaway will be held with a selection of books about residential schools to the community, including fiction and non-fiction titles for all ages (while supplies last).

New this year, the Whistler Writers Festival celebrates the art and tradition of oral storytelling featuring the talents of Tanina Williams (Lil’wat Nation) and Tsawaysia Spukwus (Squamish Nation). Eight local storytellers will share the stage with these two powerhouse keepers of stories and songs indigenous to the shared Lil’wat and Squamish territories. Free to attend. Everyone welcome.
