What Model Does Turtle Guardians Use to Guide Conservation?

​​​​​​​The Story of the Spiny Softshell Turtle- A Conservation Success Story

When people ask whether turtle conservation actually works, there is now a remarkable success story from Ontario that provides the answer: yes- but only if we protect turtles throughout their entire life cycle.

In the early 1990s, Ontario's endangered Spiny Softshell Turtle was disappearing from the Thames River. When surveys began in 1994, biologists found mostly older adults and very few young turtles entering the population; a warning sign that the population was in decline and could eventually disappear.

Species at Risk Biologist Scott Gillingwater and the Southern Ontario At Risk Reptiles (SOARR) program soon discovered one of the major reasons why. Between 99% and 100% of nests were being destroyed each year, primarily by predators such as raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and foxes. Even many protected nests in the wild experienced poor hatch success.

The solution wasn't simply protecting nests, nor was it only protecting adult turtles. Recovery required both.

Over the next three decades, SOARR combined adult monitoring, habitat stewardship, community education, nest protection, and eventually managed incubation. Through careful incubation and head-starting efforts, hatch success increased from approximately 17 -49% in natural nests to more than 90%. Thousands more hatchlings were able to enter the population.

The real breakthrough came in 2016, when the first females that had been protected as hatchlings returned to nest as adults. Because Spiny Softshell Turtles take approximately 12 to 15 years to reach maturity, this was the first clear evidence that the recovery work was rebuilding the population itself, not simply protecting individual turtles.

Today, researchers report finding all age classes, from hatchlings and juveniles to large breeding adults, throughout the Thames River population. What was once a population dominated by aging adults and very little recruitment is now considered a recovering population with evidence of successful reproduction and recruitment into the breeding population.

The story offers an important lesson for turtle conservation across Ontario.

Because turtles mature slowly and rely on exceptionally high adult survival, protecting nests alone is not enough. At the same time, protecting adults alone cannot reverse declines if few young survive to replace them. Recovery occurs when conservation efforts address both ends of the life cycle.

This is the same model we use at Turtle Guardians.

Despite the relative abundance of turtles remaining in the Highlands compared to other parts of the province, our long term studies are showing low recruitment levels; few age classes in most species.

Therefore, we began an advanced program. Every spring and summer, our young staff hired through programs such as Canada Summer Jobs, and trained volunteers help protect adult turtles through road patrols and emergency response, reducing one of the leading causes of mortality for breeding adults. At the same time, under provincial permits, we protect vulnerable nests through our incubation program, giving hatchlings a much greater chance of surviving those critical first months of life.

Today, Turtle Guardians operates Canada's third-largest turtle incubation program, helping to safeguard thousands of eggs each year while continuing to protect breeding adults on our roads. Together, these actions are helping to keep turtle populations in the Highlands and The Land Between in the landscape for our great grandchildern to connect to.

The lesson from the Spiny Softshell recovery is simple but powerful: saving turtles isn't about one action -it's about protecting every stage of their lives. When we keep adults alive long enough to reproduce and give hatchlings a fighting chance, turtle populations can recover. The Thames River Spiny Softshell population has shown us that with patience, science, and community stewardship, recovery is possible.

Meet Sunny, a Haliburton Mother Turtle. 

Every year, around the same week in late spring, people in downtown Haliburton begin asking about Sunny.

Sunny is a snapping turtle who nests along Highland Street in Haliburton, often near the Home Hardware. Like many turtles, she appears to have a remarkable sense of timing. Almost like clockwork, she emerges each year and begins her search for a nesting site. Many local residents have come to recognize her, and some look forward to seeing her annual appearance as much as any other sign of summer.

What makes Sunny especially memorable is her personality.

Anyone who spends enough time with turtles begins to notice that they are not all the same. Some are fiery and determined, hissing and charging forward with confidence. Others are gentle and cautious. Some seem entirely unbothered by the world around them. Sunny falls into that last category. While she remains a wild turtle and can be shy, she also seems remarkably comfortable around people. Perhaps that comes from spending much of her life navigating a busy downtown environment where humans, vehicles, sidewalks, and storefronts are simply part of the landscape.

Over the years, we have come to know many turtles like Sunny. Some return to the same cottage properties year after year. Others emerge from the same wetlands or travel the same roads every spring. Landowners often tell us they recognize "their" turtle when she returns to nest, and in many cases they are probably right. Female turtles are known for their fidelity to nesting areas and can return to the same locations for decades.

That annual journey is not without risk.

Every spring and early summer, female turtles leave the safety of wetlands, lakes, and marshes in search of suitable nesting sites. In doing so, they often cross roads, the leading cause of adult freshwater turtle mortality in North America. For turtles like Sunny, navigating traffic is simply part of becoming a mother.

This is especially important because turtles are slow to replace themselves. They can take decades to mature and rely on exceptionally high adult survival to maintain healthy populations. Scientists estimate that it can take roughly 60 years for a population to replace a single breeding female. When a nesting female is lost, the impact can ripple through generations.

In Ontario's Highlands, the challenge is amplified by our road network. Our mapping has found an average of approximately 0.74 kilometres of road for every square kilometre of land, meaning few wetlands, lakes, or nesting areas are far from traffic. Female turtles may travel several kilometres between seasonal habitats and nesting sites, making road crossings an unavoidable part of their annual journey.

Each summer, Turtle Guardians hires young field staff and aspiring biologists who help carry out nesting season patrols under our permits. We also train volunteers across North America. For many, one of the most memorable experiences is watching a turtle like Sunny complete her nesting journey. A turtle that may be 40, 50, or even 80 years old leaves the safety of the wetland, searches for the perfect nest site, digs her nest, lays her eggs, carefully covers them, and then begins the long trip home.

Watching that process unfold changes how you see turtles. They stop being anonymous wildlife and become individuals with stories, habits, and you get to notice their personalities.

Our incubation and nest protection programs help give hatchlings a better chance of survival, but they also remind us what is truly at stake. Every hatchling begins with a mother like Sunny. Every future generation depends on turtles surviving long enough to make that journey again.

Fun Fact: Turtles aren't stuck going forward- they can take backward steps when they need to, but their shell and wide-sprawling legs make reversing slow and awkward. That's why they usually turn around instead. Mother turtles will often to a slow and steady Uturn to water behind her to rehydrate.

Under our permits, those eggs are carefully incubated until the hatchlings are ready to return to the wild.
