En-tête Aéro Montréal

Aéro Montréal's mission is to mobilize stakeholders in Quebec's aerospace ecosystem to support its global reach, innovation capacity and growth.

// MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear members, dear partners,

According to data from AéroDynamic Advisory, the MRO market reached an impressive $101 billion in 2022. And the good news is that this growth trend is set to continue. Analysts estimate that growth could reach 3.8% per year until 2027, for a total of $120 billion, thanks mainly to engine MRO. In Québec, with all of our combined expertise, we are well-positioned to take advantage of this situation.

For several years, the MRO Working Group has been actively promoting this local expertise internationally, and this year marks a new milestone. For the first time, the MRO Americas event, which brings together the key players in our industry, will be held in the north of the United States, in Chicago. The working group is committed to showcasing Québec's expertise in a single pavilion. This will undoubtedly be an exceptional forum for promoting our know-how on the American market.

We are fortunate to be able to count on the exemplary mobilization of our cluster members, who are ready to join forces to consolidate our leadership. Together, we have the capacity to stimulate innovation and attract new talent, including in the maintenance and repair trades, which are often less well known to the general public. We also have the ability to seek new business opportunities. Let’s use upcoming international missions to strengthen our presence on the world stage and promote our local expertise.

MÉLANIE LUSSIER
President
AÉRO MONTRÉAL

 INTERVIEW

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF AÉRO MONTRÉAL’S MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) WORKING GROUP AND ITS PRESIDENT?

The MRO Working Group aims to bring together the repair and maintenance sector ecosystem, including airlines, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), large corporations, SMEs, small businesses, and government partners around a common discussion table. The president of the working group plays a mobilizing role by bringing together stakeholders and encouraging them to work on concrete actions to support the ecosystem. His objective is to identify actions beneficial to all stakeholders.

Québec benefits from a favourable environment as the third global aerospace hub after Toulouse and Seattle. By offering member companies the opportunity to meet and discuss all challenges facing the MRO sector and the regional environment, we ensure they can take full advantage of the vast knowledge potential of our industry.

HOW MANY COMPANIES ARE IN THE MRO WORKING GROUP?

The mobilization of the MRO ecosystem is quite impressive, and the players are very involved. There are 29 companies in the working group, with very good attendance at meetings. This mobilization is reflected in dynamic discussions, good collaboration, and growing engagement at each working group meeting.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FACING THE MRO INDUSTRY?

The first major challenge facing the MRO industry is the supply chain. Companies, including those in the working group, face recurring problems such as parts shortages and delays in turnaround times. These delays are critical to meet urgent maintenance needs and minimize aircraft downtime. The pressure from airlines to maximize post-COVID-19 pandemic flights makes these issues even more pressing.

In addition, parts shortages, shared by OEMs and MRO companies, lead to fierce competition for available resources. This situation can have a significant impact on production. For example, at AJW Technique, the fact that 15% of parts are missing from certain suppliers impacts up to 75% of production. In other words, 85% of parts received from suppliers have minimal impact on aircraft delivery compared to the 15% of missing parts. This could mean that for a month X, the entire monthly financial target is missing parts, which has a significant impact.

Scheduled maintenance over several years also clogs calendars, resulting in a lack of parts availability and capability.

WHAT ARE THE GROWTH PROSPECTS FOR MRO COMPANIES?

The growth prospects for MRO in Québec are promising. The province benefits from a strong presence of OEMs, notably the largest concentration in Canada, which supports the development of the sector. Similarly, our expertise contributes to growth prospects. For example, engineers responsible for the Airbus 220 program are from Québec, providing leading technical expertise in the region.

While other segments of the aerospace industry are stagnating, the MRO sector is experiencing double-digit growth, highlighting its increasing importance. It is vital that governments support the Québec industry at this time of opportunity, a task that Aéro Montréal has actively undertaken through its advocacy initiatives, notably during National Assembly Day.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR TRENDS AND CURRENT MOBILIZING PROJECTS?

Aéro Montréal's MRO Woring Group is currently involved in several major events and mobilizing projects, including:

1. The organization of a mission to MRO Americas in Chicago in April is an important opportunity for Québec's MRO companies. The working group and the Aéro Montréal team are focused on optimizing support for participating companies and seeking beneficial partnerships.

2. The ATAC (Air Transport Association of Canada) hosts a trade show that is very popular with Québec companies, alternating between Montreal and Vancouver, with the next one in Vancouver. The working group aims to ensure the presence and support the participation of Québec companies at these national events.
