Despite significant medical advancements, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality globally for both men and women. Understanding the risks associated with cardiovascular disease is essential for its prevention and effective management.

Assessing individual risk factors and implementing proactive measures to address them are crucial steps in reducing the risk of heart disease. A notable study revealed that 72% of patients hospitalized for a heart attack had cholesterol levels suggesting they were not at high risk for a cardiovascular event, indicating a need for deeper investigation.

Early detection through regular health check-ups, blood tests, and cardiovascular screenings is vital for timely intervention and management of risk factors before they escalate into overt disease.

In this webinar, Dr. Luke Mountjoy, ND will explore with you:

- The challenges in current cardiovascular risk assessment methods

- The role of advanced lipid testing in further identifying individual risk factors

- Different underlying risk factors beyond low-density cholesterol.

Hyaluronic Acid: A Natural Relief for Joint Pain

If you're one of the millions dealing with mild to moderate osteoarthritis, you're familiar with the everyday struggle of achy joints. Well, there's good news – a safe, natural remedy might just offer the relief you've been seeking: hyaluronic acid.

But what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Don't be intimidated by the scientific term. It's a substance naturally present in our bodies, concentrated in our joints, eyes, and skin. Its primary role is to act as a shock absorber and lubricant, promoting smooth and pain-free joint movement.

In osteoarthritis, the protective cartilage between bones deteriorates, leading to friction, inflammation, and pain. By injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the affected joint, it acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, reducing pain and enhancing mobility.

Research indicates that hyaluronic acid injections can offer significant relief for those with mild to moderate osteoarthritis, potentially delaying the need for joint replacement surgery. While most studies focus on knee osteoarthritis, other joints such as hips, ankles, thumbs, and big toes also show promising results.

Unlike some alternative treatments, hyaluronic acid injections typically have minimal side effects and can be administered quickly in a clinic visit, with ultrasound guidance.

However, it's important to remember that hyaluronic acid injections may not be suitable for everyone. Consultation with your healthcare provider is essential to determine if this treatment aligns with your specific needs. If osteoarthritis has sidelined you, discussing hyaluronic acid with your doctor could be the key to getting back in the game.

Food Sensitivity Testing: Getting to the root cause

I always tell my patients that amazing things happen when, we cut out the foods that negatively impact our body & replace them with foods that make our bodies thrive.

It is a very simple concept that has a massive effect! My favourite way of determining this is with a food sensitivity blood test.

Some common symptoms of food sensitivities can include: eczema, asthma, coughs, phlegm, constipation, diahrrea, gas, bloating, fatigue, brain fog, headaches, sinus congestion, heartburn, mood issues etc. etc.

Imagine not having that unwanted symptom … just by changing your diet!!!

At Integrated Health Clinic, we offer many different types of food sensitivity/ allergy testing, as well as comprehensive environmental allergy testing and treatment.

March Update

Starting with an update on our IHC Research Department, Dr. Izadi, PHD and statistician Lisa McQuarrie, MSc have made good progress on the data analysis for our 10-year survival data for both GBM and stage 4 colorectal cancer. These results are now getting closer to the publication stage. Remember, if any of our existing cancer patients have any questions about our research and our commitment to confidentiality, please contact Dr. Sara Izadi, PhD (saraizadinajafabadi@gmail.com).

This month also marks the launch of Dr. Gurdev Parmar’s Integrative Oncology Institute (IOI), an educational organization with a faculty including naturopathic, medical and radiation oncologists, as well as palliative care physicians - including Integrated Health Clinic’s very own Dr. Kevin Sclater, MD. Dr. Sarah Denotter (CCC resident) has also contributed a great deal to this course, as part of her extra-clinical educational projects. Our very own Dr. Denotter is also teaching the oncology course at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine – Boucher Campus on Dr. Parmar’s behalf. She contributed to developing the lectures which she attended last year, another one of her special educational projects. As many of you know, that have been consulting with Dr. Denotter during Dr. Parmar’s sabbatical, she is doing great work.

This coming May, the IOI will be releasing the much-anticipated Advanced Integrative Oncology Palliative Care Course, which is two years in the making. This first educational opportunity by the IOI is an 18-month online certification course for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, and other providers. Teaching the best practices of the integrative management (naturopathic + pharmaceutical) for the 26 most common symptoms in chronic disease management, including cancer care. Look out for the May Newsletter announcement on this institute, its website, and our educational opportunities.

Your team of doctors at the IHC CCC are at the very forefront of naturopathic and integrative oncology. We are providing advanced cancer screening programs. We offer innovative and cutting edge cancer therapies. We are creating the curricula and teaching the best practices of integrative symptom management. We are doing research and working towards publishing our data to help disseminate our knowledge. Most of all, we are working hard to provide the best care possible for all of our patients that entrust their care to us, an honour and privilege we do not take lightly.

Here is to more of the same exceptional care, and to our ongoing pursuit for better and better outcomes for our patients.

National Stress Awareness Month

As April unfolds, Stress Awareness Month brings into focus the vital importance of prioritizing mental health. Understanding stress as not inherently negative is key; it often serves as a messenger, signaling underlying issues that require attention. Doctor Favourite Receipes

Turkey Chili Recipe

This is a great recipe to make in a large batch and freeze or portion out for lunches/dinner (or even breakfast!) during the week. It is high in protein and fibre which helps to keep you full and satisfied and helps to stabilize blood sugar and help keep your energy and hormones stable through the day. I try to sneak in extra veg by grating it and steaming it before adding the beans and seasonings. My favorite are carrots and zucchini, but it would be easy to add any of your favorite veg.

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons avocado oil

1 yellow onion, chopped

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 medium red bell pepper, chopped

Any grated/diced veg you want – I like 2-3 carrots, 1-2 small zucchini even sliced mushrooms or diced yams

1 pound extra lean ground turkey or chicken (99%)

4 tablespoons chili powder

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste

1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes or crushed tomatoes

1 1/4 cups chicken broth

2 (15 oz) cans dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained

1 (15 oz) can sweet corn, rinsed and drained

For topping: cheese, avocado, tortilla chips, cilantro, sour cream

Instructions

  • Place oil in a large pot and place over medium high heat. Add in onion, garlic and red pepper and saute for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Add in ground turkey and break up the meat; cooking until no longer pink. Next add in chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne pepper and salt; stir for about 20 seconds.
  • Next add in tomatoes, chicken broth, kidney beans and corn. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30-45 minutes or until chili thickens and flavors come together. Taste and adjust seasonings and salt as necessary.
  • Garnish with anything you'd like.
