IURMP Call for Mentors

Apply by October 23, 2020

The Indigenous Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program (IURMP) is collecting a pool of potential faculty mentors for the upcoming session (January 2021 - April 2021). If you are interested in joining our pool of potential mentors, please complete the form here.

When students have been selected for the program in October 2020, we will begin the mentor-mentee pairing process, which we are hoping to expedite by drawing from this pool. Mentors are not guaranteed to be paired with a student, as mentors are selected based on the student’s research interests.

NOTE: The IURMP will be online this year. Please consider this when signing up.

Community Grants

Apply by December 1, 2020

Back in Spring, the UTown team launched a Community of Caring grant which many of you helped to share with your network. With your help, they were able to reach many new applicants and funded 25 projects that found thoughtful ways to connect community members together while maintaining physical distance.

The UTown@UBC grant program is once again open to applications from students, faculty, staff and residents at UBC as well as members of the Musqueam community.

This fall cycle offers grants up to $1000 for project ideas that foster community and capacity building from a distance. Applications are being accepted on a rolling deadline until December 1, 2020, or once funding is fully subscribed.

Active Kids Safety Plan and Re-opening

Since mid March 2020, Active Kids in-person delivery of community sport and physical activity programs have been suspended. During this time, Provincial Health Authority and WorkSafeBC guidelines, as well as UBC and sport sector best practices, have been closely monitored in order to create a return to operations safety plan. After significant consultation, a final plan was submitted and vetted by the Director of the School, then the Dean’s office (including Occupational and Research Safety Associates from UBC Safety and Risk Services), and a final presentation was made to the UBC Provost’s steering committee to discuss and seek approval.

We are happy to announce that approval was granted and a significantly modified version of the Active Kids portfolio is being launched at the Osborne Center in October 2020.

All Kin Staff and Faculty are encouraged to review the detailed version of the safety plan, available here.

Canada’s first 24-Hour Movement Guidelines

Canada’s first 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults offer clear direction on what a healthy 24 hours looks like for Canadian adults aged 18-64 years and 65 years or older. These guidelines are unique because they don’t just focus on a single movement behaviour, but instead look at how all these integrate together. This is the first time there are recommendations on various types of physical activity woven together with guidance on sedentary and sleep behaviours for these age groups.
