BIOLOGY

The December Final exam schedule for 2024W Term 1 will be released mid-October. The invigilation schedule for Biology TAs will be announced soon after.

UBC Science Editorial: fall or winter-themed new research, projects, or ideas. Alex Walls, UBC Media Relations Specialist, is on the hunt for stories, including fall or winter-themed new research, projects, or ideas.

These stories could include stories about flooding, climate change and its effect on the seasons, extreme weather including predictions, preparations, and management, unusual changes to local flora and fauna (ie foliage turning red earlier, animals hybernating earlier etc), foraging for local flora, and more (or upcoming days of significance such as Halloween or Thanksgiving), that tick several news values.

If you have any new research or thoughts, please feel free to email Alex alex.walls@ubc.ca.

If you'd like to check what the best audience/channel for the story is, COSMO is now a much easier to use web tool: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cHlOavkHlBbHjLM

CTLT: Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology

  • Are you interested in learning how to create an inclusive learning environment for sex and gender diverse students in your course, but not sure how or where to start? If so, then check out the newly developed Sex and Gender Inclusivity Canvas site! This Canvas site was co-created by students, faculty, and staff within the UBC Faculty of Science and includes key definitions/concepts, frequently asked questions, teaching materials, resources, and articles.

We are also hosting monthly Sex and Gender Inclusivity Community of Practice meetings this term to explore ways to include sex and gender diversity into our courses and share ideas and practices with one another in a low-stakes environment. The next meeting will take place on October 16 from 11:00am-12:00pm in BioSci 3157
    Zoom option: https://ubc.zoom.us/j/61123086144?pwd=RLyvaU3c6pefhwoOrugrYAFqmjYsNL.1

During this meeting, we will collectively explore some difficult classroom situations and workshop ideas for how to respond. You’re invited to bring any challenging situations you’ve experienced (or anticipate experiencing) that you’d like to discuss with the group; however, no need to bring anything but yourself.

All are welcome, and we’re looking forward to seeing you there! In the meantime, if you have any questions, you can contact Christine Goedhart at christine.goedhart@botany.ubc.ca.
