CHRONICLE ON AVIATION SAFETY

The go-around: easy! Really ?

Our flight safety column last week generated comments. We wish here to clarify the outline of the procedure to be followed. Thank you to those who have taken the trouble to comment.

The procedure should be as described in your POH but if you have a doubt consult a qualified instructor. But basically, the phases of the go-around and the important points to keep in mind are:

1) At the decision to release the gases:

  • Gradual throttle up to full power with control of the yaw effect which will stop the descent. In schools the 4 second rule is taught. Going all the way down at once can easily cause engine failure; something you really do not want at that time.
  • It is suggested to wait until you have a safe altitude before any turn, (min, 300 '), unless of course you have to avoid a collision.
  • Control the trim and put the flaps in the recommended configuration by the POH (Ex: 20 °) to allow the acceleration of the speed. If possible keep the wings straight otherwise be sure to maintain the trim required to increase your speed.

2) At positive rate of climb and acceleration speed:

  • Once the positive rate of climb has been established and the speed is accelerating, gradually raise the flaps (ex 10 °)
  • Take the trim required to reach Vx or Vy depending on the desired climb rate.

3) At safe altitude (eg 500 'AGL or 1000' AGL as appropriate): Continue the post-takeoff sequence.
