Our sincerest congratulations to the Class of 2021 Bachelor of Media Studies graduates! On Thursday, June. 3, we held our own virtual graduation ceremony to celebrate this year's UBC BMS graduates!

20th Anniversary of the Talking Stick Festival
June 1, 2021 – July 1, 2021

The Talking Stick Festival: Summer Sojourn online. Enjoy Indigenous performance, art, concerts, dance performances, visual arts exhibition, readings, storytelling, theatrical production, and film.

Celebrating acts of artistic transformation, creative defiance, community-building and making space for all voices.

The event starts with Winter Lodge, a celebratation of performances to engage the audiences by sharing stories and knowledge through a series of virtual conversations, discussions, panels and talking circles.

Augmented Reality Artworks for Instagram
June 12, 2021, 1:00 PM – June 20, 2021, 3:30 PM PDT

Turn your physical artworks into interactive 3D filters that respond to mobile camera imput!

In this online workshop led by artist Arman Padax, learn how to use social media as a part of your art practise.

You will learn to create filters and effects that recognize and respond to face movements and other objects through a user's mobile camera.

By the end of the workshop you'll have created your own AR filter to promote your own art work as a publicly available filter on instagram.

The pricing is a sliding scale for students and recent grads.

Roots and Shoots with Cris Derksen
Wednesday, June 17, 2021 12PM PDT

Presented by the Chan Centre as part of the Roots and Shoots Music Education Program

Cree cellist and composer Cris Derksen performs some favourite pieces and discusses her work in a special digital edition of the Roots and Shoots Music Education Program, produced by the Chan Centre annually as a resource for Vancouver area schools.

In this brand new 23-minute recording, Derksen introduces school-aged children to an evocative new sound world in which the strings of her cello creak and squeal to mimic the sounds of cracking ice and singing whales and a traditionally “classical” instrument takes on a new life.

The celebration will feature an iconic drag lip sync by Canadian drag celebrity Scarlett BoBo, a stunning operatic performance by UBC alum Teiya Kasahara and a fun-filled battle of wits in a Pride Trivia Extravaganza hosted by UBC alum Mike Whitaker.

UNSW Chinese Studies Seminar Series: New Online Resources on Early Chinese Cinema
Wednesday, June 23, 2021 7:10 PM – 8:15 PM PDT

This event is part of the UNSW Chinese Studies Seminar Series, organised in collaboration with the Australian Society for Asian Humanities (ASAH).

This talk introduces the Chinese Film Classics project, an initiative aimed at enabling global audiences to explore Chinese film history in new ways.

Join Professor Christopher Rea as he presents new web-based approaches to film research and pedagogy, and invites the participation of film scholars and film archives in further developing this open-access project.

This course will look at digital media production in the context of community engagement. Includes critical media literacy, community-based research ethics, project design, training in media forms such audio, video, photography, and web publishing.

This course will unpack new media and digital storytelling works designed and implemented by Indigenous artists, authors, and programmers.

JRNL 400: Feminist Postcolonial Critique and Journalism in a Digital Age
Offered in 21W Term One

This course will look at feminist and postcolonial critiques related to professional norms and practices of journalists, examining underlying democratic ideals in a rapidly evolving media landscape.

Offered in 21W Term Two

This course will examines the challenges, opportunities and foundational research related to the emergence of social media platforms, services and tools as part of an evolving media ecosystem. Political, social, ethical and legal implications for media organizations, journalists and citizens.

MUSC 119: Introduction to Music Technology
Offered in 21W Term Two

This course will look at practical and theoretical training in technologies that support current artistic and academic practice, such as MIDI, podcasts/videocasts, websites, social media, and software for score notation, music education, and basic audio/video editing.

This course will look at visual print culture, and contemporary and historical technical print practices. Emphasis on hand-drawn intaglio, relief, screen and/or stencil printing, and graphic digital applications.

2021 Writing Prize

The second Annual Capture Writing Prize winner will be commissioned to write a 1,000 word text for Capture's annual catalogue on a current issue in lens-based art for which a $2,000 CAD prize will be awarded.

The winner’s work will be featured alongside the writing of established contemporary thinkers in the field.

Capture is committed to amplifying underrepresented voices and encourages applicants from these communities.

Calling photographers, filmmakers, and visual storytellers! This is an opportunity to create photographic or video work through exploratory workshops with contemporary Indigenous artists.

Inspired by growing networks of care throughout arts communities, Response: Soft Action considers care and its relationship to action.

Workshops will take place online during Summer and Fall 2021, helping participants create original work that will be shown at The Polygon Gallery.
