LEARN MORE | | Fire Prevention Week Nanaimo Fire Rescue is participating in Fire Prevention Week from October 5 to 11. This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights the importance of safe practices when using these powerful energy sources. Help raise awareness by encouraging your community to make smart choices when purchasing, charging, storing and recycling lithium-ion batteries. Improper use or disposal can lead to dangerous fires. By spreading the word, we can all contribute to a safer environment and prevent battery-related incidents before they happen. Let’s work together to keep Nanaimo safe and informed. This project reflects the City’s commitment to working with local First Nations artists and encouraging public art that supports reconciliation while fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of local First Nations culture. Photos by: Sean Fenzl | | Loudon Park Expansion The City of Nanaimo is expanding Loudon Park through the recent purchase of 4246 and 4288 Victoria Avenue, two properties adjacent to the Park. In addition to increasing community access to Long Lake, the expanded park land will provide more options to benefit the surrounding neighbourhood and wider community as part of the Loudon Park Improvement Project. The Project addresses priorities in the Integrated Action Plan with plans to improve the park and support the Nanaimo Rowing Club and Nanaimo Canoe & Kayak Club, which has called Long Lake home for decades. These upgrades are part of a broader effort to make Loudon Park more accessible and enjoyable for the community. Enjoy a fun-filled evening of skating under black lights with glowing accessories and music. It’s a great way to celebrate the season with friends and family. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to plan ahead. | | Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week? Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects. For more information on Nanaimo construction projects, visit the current Construction page on the City's website. - Expect significant delays due to single lane alternating traffic along Hammond Bay Road between Rutherford Road and Brickyard Road intersections while crews continue to work on replacing sewer and water mains. Avoid delays by taking Rutherford Road and Uplands Drive as an alternative route.
- Expect slight delays due to single lane alternating traffic along Dickinson Road between Groveland Drive and Medd Road intersections while crews continue to work on replacing water mains. Avoid delays by taking Schook Road, and Dover Road as an alternative route.
- No large truck traffic will be permitted onto Boxwood Road, between Bowen Road and Northfield Road, until October 10.
- There will be construction of a new crosswalk at the intersection of Campbell Street and Selby Street. Watch for lane closures, detours, construction signs and traffic control persons.
- Expect single lane alternating traffic or eastbound lane closures at times on Jingle Pot Road at the intersection of Holland Road. Eastbound traffic watch for possible detour using Holland Road and Ashlee Road.
Note: All businesses in the construction areas are open unless otherwise posted. When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions. Remember that construction zone speed limits are 30 km/hr unless otherwise posted.
