Bowen Island Municipality hires new Fire Chief

Bowen Island Municipality is pleased to announce the hiring of a new Fire Chief, Derek Dickson. Prior to joining Bowen Island Municipality, Derek spent over 20 years with the North Vancouver City Fire Department as a Fire Inspector and Investigator, a National Fire Protection Association Certified Structural Firefighter, and in his most recent role as the Captain of the Training Division. In addition to his career as a professional firefighter, Derek has maintained his credentials as a certified Fire Protection Technician for over 25 years and continues to serve as a subject matter expert and instructor for Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC education programs.

Derek has close ties to Bowen Island, having assisted with the annual Fire Department Open House since 2004 by providing fire protection equipment inspections and general fire safety education for residents and business owners. Derek is also a founding member of Fire Rescue International Training Association where he volunteers his time to deliver training to firefighters across Latin America.

“I am excited to begin work with the management team and the fire fighters on Bowen,” said Derek Dickson, “I look forward to the continued success of the Bowen Island Fire Department and the opportunity to deliver professional emergency service to the community of Bowen Island.”

The Fire Chief is appointed by the Chief Administrative Officer and is a key member of the municipality’s management team. The Fire Chief will administer, plan, direct and control all aspects of the Bowen Island Fire Department including administration, fire suppression, fire prevention and rescue activities.

Derek will begin work at Bowen Island Municipality in July.
