High Streamflow Advisory issued for Howe Sound

Rain on the South Coast is forecasted for Saturday, with an estimated 30 to 60 mm of rainfall, with high scenarios in some weather models reaching 100+ mm. Freezing levels are expected to remain high (2,000 m), and additional snowmelt runoff is expected from higher elevations in the region where snow remains.

Rivers are expected to rise rapidly on Saturday and into Sunday in response to heavy rainfall. Rivers in the area may experience enhanced hazard for high flow during this period. While these levels may not be high enough for specific flood concerns, high flows and rapid rises in rivers can pose a hazard for road washouts and public safety for recreationalists.

Stay tuned to the River Forecast Centre for updates.

Lower Speed Limits

Starting February 17, speed limits on all streets in the Downtown Squamish and Oceanfront neighbourhoods will be reduced to 30 km/h. This change is being implemented in response to ICBC data and public feedback gathered during 2023 and 2024 to gauge community input on road safety and traffic speeds.

Speed limits – Unless otherwise posted:

  • Municipal roads: 50 km/h
  • Downtown Squamish and Oceanfront: 30 km/h
  • School zones: 30 km/h (7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on school days)
  • Playground zones: 30 km/h (from dusk to dusk)
  • Neighbourhood ways: 30 km/h
