This Week...

Curbside Calendars are being delivered, register for winter break programs and purchase tickets for "Activate" New Year's Day event. Read on for more!

Live and Give Greener

Let's make memories, not waste, this year. Here are some tips to reduce waste:

Reduce food waste

  • Plan ahead, write your lists early
  • Create and stick to your list, reducing the urge to throw more in the cart "just in case"
  • Know what you already have in your fridge and freezer so you don't duplicate
  • Don't overserve, portion control is key
  • Have a plan for leftovers, use the City's take out container guide for tips

Green Tip: In Nanaimo, containers and utensils labelled "Compostable" and/or "Bio-degradable" have to be thrown in the garbage (black bins) as our composting facilities do not use the extreme heat that is required to compost them. This type of plastic is also not recyclable and can't be put in the blue bins.

Reduce packaging waste

  • Give an experience instead of a thing - Parks, Recreation & Culture gift certificates are available at local recreation facilities!
  • Choose items with as little packaging as possible
  • Bake/create/upcycle something as a gift
  • Choose sustainable wrapping options, avoid plastic bows and wrapping that can't be recycled

Wrapping Tip: Replace plastic bows and ribbon with raffia paper ribbon. Natural raffia is recyclable and can be placed in your blue bins.

Did You Know? If you’re unsure how to properly dispose of any item use the waste wizard tool on our website or download the free Nanaimo Recycles app!

ZERO WASTE INITIATIVES

curbside collection schedule - new 2 two year calendars are being delivered

Curbside Calendars

Each December the City of Nanaimo delivers curbside collection calendars to homes. This year, the calendar will contain both 2023 and the 2024 schedules in an easy to read format.

Organizing a two-year curbside calendar is expected to result in over $30,000 of savings and a reduction of emissions.

Residents are asked to maintain calendars in good condition as new ones will not be delivered next year.

An online version of the curbside collection schedule is available any time. Simply visit the website or download the Nanaimo Recycles app for free from the App Store or Google Play.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Along the Nanaimo Parkway, between East Wellington Road and Northfield Road, construction crews continue to break rock and fuse pipe for the Midtown Water Supply Project. Commuters should expect merging construction traffic entering the Nanaimo Parkway south of Northfield Road.
  • Trench Preparations will create visual distractions and minor delays along Northfield Road, between the Nanaimo Parkway and Northfield Marsh before Boxwood Road. Commuters should expect minor delays along Boxwood Road between Meredith Road and Tulsa Road in relation to the Midtown Water Supply Project.
  • Beban Park has detours within the park and areas of restricted access for the Midtown Water Supply Project. Access to the Stevie Smith Bike Park and Community Gardens is off Bowen Road past the tennis courts and golf course. All main parking lots, facilities and park amenities are open. In an effort to protect the public and provide a safe working area, certain areas of the park are fenced off and restricted for all non-construction personnel.
  • Labieux Road between Beban Parkway and Kenworth Road will be closed in both directions for the Midtown Water Supply Project. The road closure will be in place for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Access is available for local traffic and emergency vehicles only. Commuters should plan an alternate route. A detour will be in place and the closure will remain in effect until mid-January.
  • Metral Drive is substantially complete! Road markings will continue as weather and temperatures allow.
