Honouring Canada's Indigenous People and History

The month of June marks National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time when we celebrate and reflect on the history, heritage, and culture of Indigenous peoples. Our campus was founded in partnership with the Musqueum Chiefs in whose territory the campus is situated. This year, the terrible discovery of the unmarked graves of 215 children on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School is a reminder of the historic and ongoing systemic violence and injustices directed against Indigenous peoples. We all mourn over the innocent lives that were stolen. The School of Kinesiology stands with Indigenous communities seeking the truth about their missing children and calls upon all Canadians to take personal responsibility to learn about these truths.

The final week of June is dedicated to National Indigenous Physical Activity Awareness week (NIPAAW), June 21st to June 27th. The intent of this annual week-long event is to promote physical activity within our urban and rural Indigenous communities through organizing several simple and fun initiatives. The School's Indigenous Studies in Kinesiology partnered with the First Peoples' Cultural Council, Indigenous Physical Activity & Cultural Circle (IPACC) to create four Nlaka’pamuxcin Physical Activity videos featuring Elders in the Nlaka’pamuxcin First Nations community. We are honoured to present these to you below and we hope you enjoy and learn from these elders.

KINDIGENOUS NEWS

Indigenous Physical Activity Awareness Week

UBC Indigenous Studies in Kinesiology partnered with the First People's Cultural Council Indigenous Physical Activity & Cultural Circle (IPACC) to create four Nlaka’pamuxcin Physical Activity videos featuring Elders in the Nlaka’pamuxcin First Nations community.

These videos showcase the four Elders, Charon Spinks, Judy Hanna, Buster Adams, and Maurice Michell, who each share a story in Nlaka’pamuxcin on being physically active on the land. These videos create vital connections of Indigenous traditional language that can be passed onto younger and future generations. They also share ways community members can connect to the land, as a way to continue overall healthy wellbeing. The videos are in both Nlaka’pamuxcin and English.

Many thanks go out to Harvey Dunstan for sharing his singing voice in the introductions, and thanks to Stein Valley Nlakapamux School and piyeʔwiʔx kt / Beeya.wEE.hh kt Language Foundation Society for their support.
