Bowen Island Public Library's e-Newsletter • March 2024 | Small Town Pride: Film & Discussion Saturday, March 23 | 1:00 pm 1 pm: Film: Small Town Pride Join us for a showing of this Canadian documentary, an intimate look at the joys and challenges of being queer in a small town, following LGBTQ2S+ people and allies as they prepare for their local Pride celebrations. Co-written and directed by Bowen-born and raised Riley Sparks! 2 pm: Discussion led by Leah Gregg Bowen Island local, Leah Gregg, will lead a conversation on “What can Bowen Island do to better support our LGBTQ2S+ community?” and “What could a community Pride event look like on Bowen Island?” Come for the film (1 pm-2 pm) and/or the discussion afterward—whatever works for you. Members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, their families, friends, allies, and all interested community members are encouraged to share thoughts and listen to others’ after the film. Want to Put on a Pride Event on Bowen Island? If you’re interested in seeing an all-ages Pride event happen on Bowen, or want to be involved in it’s creation, this is a great opportunity to meet others who want the same. You’ll also meet members of the Literacy Task Group, a group of local non-profits interested in supporting a Pride event for Bowen. They will be present to hear your visions for Pride on Bowen, and share information about funding that is available to support such an event. Go to Calendar Event
| | The Many Faces of MAID: an Author Talk with Carol Cram Sunday, March 24 | 1:30 pm Join Carol Cram, Bowen Island local and co-author of The Many Faces of MAID: What to Expect When Someone You Know Chooses Medical Assistance in Dying, as she talks about compiling the stories of 17 people, including herself, who supported a loved one through MAID. We're accepting seed donations now and throughout the growing season as well. If you have saved or store-bought seed to share, bring it to the library, and we'll add them to the Seed Library. The Seed Library is currently stocked with seed packets prepared and decorated by the the Bowen Island Community School Student Garden Club, as well as seeds donated from West Coast Seeds and patrons like you! Learn More | | Movie Night: Rockfield Thursday, March 28 | 6 pm Join us for a screening of Rockfield (2020), a documentary about Rockfield Studios, a farm and live-in recording studio in Wales, where some of the greatest bands and musicians of our time have recorded some of their biggest hit records. Musicians include Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant, Tony Iommi, Dave Brock, David Bowie, Jim Kerr, Kingsley Ward, Charles Ward, Ann Ward, Lisa Ward; bands include Black Sabbath, Queen, Stone Roses, Oasis, and Coldplay. Directed by Hannah Berryman. In English. Rated 14A. Drop in, no registration required. Come a little early and grab a comfy chair—film starts promptly at 6 pm, and runs 90 minutes. | | Save the Date: 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Old General Store Saturday, August 10, 2024 Save Saturday, August 10th for a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Old General Store, a beloved building which has had many functions and identities, and which now houses the Bowen Island Library. Stay tuned in the spring and summer for more details. See the Youth Curators' Exhibit The Bowen Island Community School Youth Curators have an excellent exhibit on now in the BICS foyer, open to the public, called "The many layers of the Old General Store and its rich history." See the photos below and make a trip to the school to learn all about the life of this unique building. The Mini Book Store is located in the Library's main (south) entrance foyer. | Book Donation Days Sundays, March 10 & 24 | 10 am-12 pm Donations of clean, good condition used books can be brought to the Bowen Island Library Annex starting at 10:00 am, going until volunteers' bins are full (no later than 12:00 pm). The volunteers are especially looking for novels and children's books at this time, but other types will be considered. A Friends of the Library volunteer will pre-screen your donations while you wait and will accept those that meet donation guidelines. Donors will need to take back any items that do not meet the guidelines. We thank everyone who donates books in support of the Bowen Library! | | WorkBC Career Advisor Tuesday, March 26 | 11 am-2 pm Drop in to meet with Janice, a WorkBC Career Advisor, in the Library Flex Room, and get one-on-one help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job searches, insights on the job market, career and education advice, and more. Janice is very likely to be able to see you right away! This drop-in service is available is available in the Flex Room from 11 am-2pm on Tuesdays, March 26, April 23, May 28, and June 25, 2024. | | French Connections Saturdays, March 2, 16, 30 | 10:30 am Drop in and join us to practice your conversational French, and get to know other French language learners on Bowen Island! The focus is on beginner and intermediate speakers, but all levels are welcome. We meet 10:30-11:30 am, but participants are welcome to stay longer if the conversation is still rolling!
