THE RANKIN REPORT

Remembrance Day Lest We Forget

Dear Timberlea-Prospect Residents,

As we enter November and the temperatures drop, we need to be extra focused on the growing number of homeless people in the province. It is one of the main focuses of our caucus, along with affordability in general, as we continue with questioning in the Fall legislative session.

There are many issues facing the province, from the increasingly long wait-times at the emergency rooms, to power bills going up again in January, to not being able to find a space for childcare in the local community.

I have tabled several private member bills that would lower power bills for low to moderate income families, provide support to childcare workers and speed up the electrification of transportation sector with more charging stations and electric school buses.

On a local level, we have an exciting time ahead! The Bayers Lake Outpatient I helped announce in 2017 is opening, on November 20th. The BLT community centre rebuild will go to tender, finally I am told any day now, for construction during the 2024 year. These are two very impactful projects for generations to come, right here in Timberlea-Prospect.

I appreciate the feedback and I hope to see folks at one of the local Remembrance Day ceremonies this weekend.

BLT Community Centre project

As of December 18, the Lakeside Community building will be closed to allow for the demolition of this building to make way for new infrastructure that will feature a full-size gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, playground, slash pad, and a community kitchen.

This new state-of-the art building known as the BLT Community Centre will serve as an important pillar in our community. It has always been a personal long-term goal of mine as your MLA to bring new infrastructure into our community. This community centre will foster active lifestyles, support community projects, and provide opportunities to connect people within our community.

Construction of the new facility will start in 2024 and the centre is expected to open in 2025.

Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) is the leading and longest-standing university in Canada for the advancement of women. Founded in 1873 by the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, it was one of few institutions of higher education for women and girls in Canada, at a time when women could not vote.

For 150 years, MSVU has worked to challenge the status quo. To improve access to higher education. To champion the underrepresented and underserved.
