Learn from quality improvement projects supported by “value-added” funds

BC Renal website offers new one-stop access to reader-friendly reports

Each year, BC Renal and the health authority renal programs use special “value-added” funds from provincial renal contracts to implement a variety of quality improvement projects.

For the past several years, we’ve been creating reader-friendly reports that succinctly cover project highlights and challenges. In addition to reporting on the use of funds, these documents provide members of our provincial network with examples of work they may be able to draw from to improve their own practices.

Nurse team lead Violet Tong retires after making a difference to many

After 22 years of steadfast commitment to improving the lives of kidney patients, Violet Tong, team lead at Fraser Health’s Surrey Kidney Care Centre, is retiring in October.

Violet, a Hong Kong nursing school graduate of 1986, became a registered nurse in BC three years later. She worked in cardiac and advanced care settings before moving to kidney care in 2000. She switched because, “Kidney care involves providing self-management support to patients with chronic conditions that enables them to manage their health day-to-day.”

Patient guide on cannabis sheds light for kidney patients seeking relief

A recent addition to BC Renal’s website has become a well-referenced pain- and discomfort-management resource for people living with kidney disease. Medical cannabis in patients with chronic kidney disease is a 16-page guide written in a conversational “questions and answers” format.

Featured Resources

Step-by-Step Resources for Living Donation

BC Renal and BC Transplant have launched matching web pages with newly developed step-by-step resources for living donor kidney transplants.

The resources are aimed at people facing kidney failure who would like to learn more about kidney transplants and how to try to find a living donor. Information is also available for people considering donating one of their kidneys.

Glomerulonephritis Web Page for BC Patients

BC Renal now has a web page focused on addressing the needs of approximately 6,000 British Columbians living with glomerulonephritis (GN). Many of these individuals would typically look to information based in the United States and elsewhere, which isn’t always relevant, so a BC resource better addresses their needs.

Project manager Yuriy Melnyk explains additional reasons why a BC Renal GN page is helpful: “People who live with GN have some unique needs."

 Kidney Foundation Highlight

Nutrition for Newly Diagnosed Kidney Patients

Learn about eating well! These recorded webinars were created by a registered renal dietitian and patient partners. They are for people who are newly diagnosed with kidney disease or those who would like to learn more about how choosing foods and meal planning can help achieve better health and a more positive relationship with food and nutrition. Patient partners share their health journeys and how nutrition helped them, along with current and reliable information presented by a dietitian on how to use practical strategies for nourishing your kidneys.

Kidney Foundation Launches Kidney Wellness Hub

The Kidney Foundation, BC & Yukon Branch is excited to introduce the Kidney Wellness Hub to support the health and wellbeing of kidney patients and their support networks. Designed to meet kidney families wherever they are on their kidney journey, it’s an online site that members of the kidney community say serves a very important role.

KAIROS Blanket Exercise

BC Renal staff learn deeply from KAIROS Blanket Exercise

On a September afternoon, dozens of BC Renal staff shared the moving experience of participating in the workshop known as the KAIROS Blanket Exercise. For about three hours, they learned from an Indigenous perspective about the history and legacy of colonization and genocide in Canada. The session included a talking circle to reflect on their new knowledge and talk about how they would carry the experience forward in their personal and work lives. Read more

Instructor-led training and on-demand eLearning available

PROMIS offers two training options: a scheduled, instructor-led session (via Zoom) or if you prefer greater flexibility, eLearning/video training, accessible whenever you choose.
