ZEDI - Zoology Equity Diversity Inclusion

The Zoology Equity Diversity Inclusion (ZEDI) committee is here to address concerns and promote EDI in the department. These concerns could apply to any group of individuals who work or study in our department, including undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, administrative and research staff, and teaching and research faculty. For example, last October ZEDI hosted an event for undergraduates on tips and approaches to get started in research at UBC.

If you have a concern, comment, or suggestion please reach out to us using this anonymous Qualtrics survey, or directly via email at zoology.edi@zoology.ubc.ca.

Quarterly Laboratory Fire Drills

For rooms such as research labs that have flammable/combustible liquids, please remember to conduct your quarterly fire drills. The fire drills may include a complete building fire drill (which we recently had on August 26th), silent drills, and table talk drills.

Please refer to the "Fire drill - quarterly poster" which can be downloaded here:

Lab Safety and Inspections

2026 Building/lab inspections

The zoology local safety team (ZLST) would like to notify all faculty members who have research labs in the Biological Sciences Building and the Beaty Biodiversity Research Center that we will be starting with the yearly lab inspections in November and December.

We have recently hired a new work learn student who will be helping us to get our labs to meet Safety and Risk Services standards. Until the end of the year, the LST will be sending out an email to each BioSci/BRC faculty member so that we can arrange a tour of your lab, be shown which chemicals belong to your lab, and if there are any chemicals you no longer need to be disposed. For any question regarding this, please feel free to contact Patrick: tamkee@zoology.ubc.ca

As we head into flu season, let's all do our part to keep our community healthy.
If you're feeling unwell, please stay home to rest and recover. While masks are not required, anyone who chooses to wear one is welcome to do so, it's a personal choice we respect.

Get Ready to Shakeout, October 15, 2026
Practice how to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON at 10:15 a.m. during the annual Great BC ShakeOut. The Great BC ShakeOut is an annual province-wide earthquake drill for everyone to practice how to protect themselves and to be better prepared in the event of an earthquake: DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!), take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and HOLD on to it until the shaking stops.

UBC Vancouver will also be testing the emergency notification system, UBC Alert during ShakeOut. Students, faculty and staff will receive a test notification by text and voice message. The test will also run on UBC IT managed devices.
UBC Alert also sends a push notification to the UBC Safe App.

UBC ARC Chinook Object Storage Transition and Retirement - December 2027

After serving the UBC research community since 2020, the UBC ARC Chinook object storage service is approaching the end of its lifespan. The system will undergo a phased retirement, with full decommissioning planned for December, 2027.

The Chinook hardware warranty will expire in July 2027. While UBC ARC is actively seeking funding to build a successor storage platform, current global hardware supply chain challenges have created budget uncertainties. Because a direct, on-premises replacement system is not guaranteed at this time, a phased retirement transition timeline has been established to provide researchers with sufficient time to evaluate options and plan for future storage needs.
