December 20, 1927: first airmail flight in Canada

On December 20, 1927, Roméo Vachon parachuted from a Fairchild a small mail bag that history records as the first delivery of mail by parachute in Canada. Then on Christmas Day, it drops – but without a parachute – mail over the North Shore. It was the beginning of airmail deliveries in Canada.

On December 17, 1954, Roméo Vachon died. In 1969, the Aeronautics and Space Institute of Canada created the “Romeo Vachon” prize in memory of the pilot. This award recognizes ingenious achievements in the field of aeronautics and space activities in Canada. Roméo Vachon will finally receive a final posthumous tribute in 1974 with his appointment to the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame.
