Read on for more! | 55+ BC Games The 55+ BC Games will be happening in the City from September 9 to 13. This means that there will be interruptions to schedules for public drop-in sessions at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, Nanaimo Ice Centre and Frank Crane Arena, and some facilities will be unavailable to the public while being used by games participants. These facilities include Beban Pickle Ball Courts, Tennis Courts at Beban and Bowen Park, Disc Golf at Bowen Park. Signage has been posted at facilities where the games will be taking place. | | 2026 Culture Grants Calling all creatives, organizers, and culture champions! Her debut collection, "For Your Safety Please Hold On" (Nightwood Editions, 2014) won the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award from the League of Canadian Poets. | | World Trade Centre Tribute Marking another year since September 11, 2001, you can pay tribute in Nanaimo outside Fire Station 1. In 2009, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began accepting requests from organizations for a piece of World Trade Center steel. The steel was recovered from the World Trade Center site after September 11, 2001, and secured at JFK Airport by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The steel withstood the most horrific attack on American soil that took the lives of 2,819 people. Nanaimo Fire Rescue is proud to have received one of 1,500 of these pieces. For more information on Nanaimo construction projects, visit the current Construction page on the City's website. - Expect significant delays due to single lane alternating traffic along Hammond Bay Road between Emil Place and Brickyard Road intersections while crews continue to work on replacing sewer and water mains. Next week drivers, transit users, cyclists and pedestrians should expect Hammond Bay Road to be busier than usual as Rutherford Elementary School and Dover Bay. Secondary School reopen after the summer break. Drivers should consider taking Rutherford Road and Uplands Drive as an alternative route to avoid delays if passing through the construction work zone. - Commercial Street is now open to vehicle traffic between Wharf Street and Church Street however, intermittent lane closures can be expected during working hours. FREE daily 2-hour parking is available along downtown streets and on Levels 2 & 3 of the Bastion Street Parkade for the duration of the project.
