Richmond Hill LBC Celebrates 100 Years in 2018!

The Richmond Hill Lawn Bowling Club is thrilled to announce that Hakim Optical will be the title sponsor for the Club’s 100th Anniversary event in July. Mr. Bijan Minbashian, VP Operations of Hakim, noted, “We’re pleased to support the Richmond Hill not-for-profit club as it celebrates this milestone. Imagine a club being able to thrive for one hundred years, with all thework being done by volunteers!”

Hakim representatives will be on hand at the event on Sunday, July 8th at the RHLBC clubhouse to officially celebrate the anniversary. The day’s agenda will include a chance to meet up with other lawn bowlers from around the province, some speeches, refreshments, and, of course, lawn bowling!

“We rely on sponsors to help us stay sustainable. Without sponsors, lawn bowling would not be the accessible, inexpensive sport that it is”, noted Terry Knight, current RHLBC President. “Lawn bowling hasn’t really changed much over the past hundred years”, Terry said. “The Richmond Hill Club is known to be a friendly club. People of all ages come out as often as they’re able and enjoy a modestly physical activity with a strong social component. Sponsors over the years have helped us make that possible.”

OLBA members will be invited to the RHLBC party on July 8th. For more details, check out the RHLBC website at, or watch for more information in this newsletter.

World Short Mat Bowlers

Reports from Sweden indicated that Team Canada finished 7th of 11 countries.  Bill Arthur reported on Facebook that in the triples they were never going to beat Wales (silver medallist), England (bronze) or Ireland. He says that they should have beaten Belgium but fell away after a good start. Also on a good day could have beaten Norway and Sweden. Several of the ladies on the team in addition to Louisa suffered sickness so that by the time of the final triples match the team had run out of alternates and Bill and Johanne Cote had to play two against three against Ireland. That’s four bowls for Canada and six for Ireland!

If you have deleted your Face book account here are some pictures from the event:

Ottawa Area Bowlers

Are you interested in short mat bowling?

  • Short mat bowling is played indoors
  • The season runs from October to May
  • Regular bowls are used
  • The “rink” is 45 feet long.

Short mat bowling is played throughout the world and each year new clubs are being formed throughout Canada. In March, 22 players from clubs in Kingston, Cobourg, Toronto, Burlington and BC competed in the World Short Mat Bows Championships in Sweden.

Are you still interested?

Plans are now being made to establish an Ottawa short mat bowls club with play beginning in September/October 2018. But before anything can happen we need your help. We need to know:

- How many people are interested and

- Who is willing to get involved in the organization of the club*.

(*proper organization and incorporation of a club will take at least 3 months to arrange.)

Are you still interested?

Luigi Lolli

It is with sadness that I inform you of the recent passing of our colleague Luigi Lolli. Luigi joined Goulbourn LBC in July 2012 and had been a regular bowler since that time. Luigi was also an active volunteer with the greens group, and a regular weekly presence on the green. Luigi will be remembered for his constant dress of long trousers and sweater regardless of weather, as well as his enthusiastic and accurate bowling. We will miss his friendly smile on the green.

Edward "Ed" Edwards

Ed passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at his home in Waterloo, on Friday, March 2, 2018, at the age of 86.

Beloved husband of Ellen (nee Graham) for 60 years. Cherished dad of Diane (John) Timmings, Ron (Marlane) Edwards, and Lori Edwards (Stuart Welsh). Proud grandpa of Emily (Kevin) Bond, Beverly (Ian) MacDonald, Ben Timmings (Teagen Knowles), Angela Timmings, Jerrett Edwards (Morgan), Joshua Edwards, Tylea Edwards, Chris Funk, and Stacey Funk. Loving great-grandpa of Sophie and Isabelle Bond, Cameron MacDonald, and Nicholas Edwards. Dear brother of June (Bill) Collier and brother-in-law of Donna Hill.

Predeceased by his parents, Edward (Ted) Edwards and Grace Rae; and brother, Bob (Betty Jean) Edwards.

Ed retired in 1993 from Revenue Canada as a field auditor. During his lifetime, Ed participated in Kiwanis Club, Probus Club, Retired Business and Professional Men’s Club, and Kitchener Minor Soccer. Ed and Ellen enjoyed square and round dancing, lawn bowling with Heritage Greens Lawn Bowling Club, several bridge clubs, and traveling. Ed served on the finance committee of St. James'-Rosemount United Church in Kitchener where he was a long time member.

Robert (Bob) Marshall

It with great sadness that I have to inform you that on Thursday February 22, 2018 Robert (Bob) Marshall passed away. Bob had been a previous President of the Georgetown Lawn Bowling Club, our greens keeper and long time member. He will be greatly missed by the club for his ongoing support and contact with sponsors and helpers. Bob was well known throughout District 9 and other OLBA clubs nearby; through tournament competition.
