Holiday Recycling Guide

Cleaning up after the holidays? We've put together a quick what goes where holiday guide:

π—•π—Ÿπ—¨π—˜ 𝗖𝗔π—₯𝗧: Tissue wrapping paper, paper gift wrap, rigid plastic packaging from toys (the stuff you need scissors to cut), greeting cards, cardboard boxes and shoe boxes. Please ensure that gift wrap is not lined with plastic or foil and any electronic components from musical gift cards are removed and taken to an appropriate depot.
π—•π—Ÿπ—”π—–π—ž 𝗖𝗔π—₯𝗧: Napkins, ribbons, bows, tape, foam peanuts, ropes and tinsel.
π—šπ—₯π—˜π—˜π—‘ 𝗖𝗔π—₯𝗧: Food scraps, paper towel, disposable wooden utensils and parchment paper.
π——π—˜π—£π—’π—§ π—’π—‘π—Ÿπ—¬: Bubble wrap, styrofoam packaging, foil/metallic gift-wrapping paper, plastic shopping bags, old Christmas lights, batteries, glass jars and plastic shipping envelopes.

Winter Wonderland

Join us at the Frank Crane Arena December 24 and December 26 - 30, where it will be transformed into a West Coast Winter Wonderland. These skating sessions are FREE and include skate and helmet rentals.

These free sessions are thanks to the support from local businesses and community organizations.

Drop in during any of our public times or rent the ice privately for your friends, family or co-workers.

Activate 2024

Start 2024 off β€œactively” by β€œlaunching” into a variety of activities as a way to start the new year off right! This is the second annual New Year's Day Family Event!

Held on Monday, January 1, 12-5 pm at Beban Park. Tickets are available in advance at Beban Park or at the door ($48 for a "Festive Five" or $12 a single).

Enjoy swimming, skating, musical entertainment (The Big Mess), games, crafts, inflatables and more! There will be food trucks and a concession on site.

Kundalini Yoga

Come and activate your Shakti (energy) on January 17 - February 21 between 5:15 - 6:30 pm at Oliver Woods Community Centre (course code #109601). Join in 75 minutes of joy while we incorporate Pranayama (breathwork), chanting, singing and energetic repetitive yoga poses. This class is accessible to all fitness levels. Prepare to leave feeling balanced and invigorated.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

Midtown Water Supply and Midtown Gateway Projects

  • Within Beban Park near the main south entrance, construction of a valve station will be occurring with intermittent traffic disruptions within the park. Access to and from the Beban Heritage House and Centennial Building will be from the access closest to the buildings, the access nearest to the south main entrance is closed to construction. All businesses and parking lots remain open and accessible.
  • Commuters can expect minor delays along many streets in the City while the construction crews progress on this project. The construction will create visual distractions and minor delays for commuters. Drivers, pay close attention to signage and the construction traffic as they enter and exit these sections of the project:
  • East Wellington, Westwood Road to Bowen Road, in particular in front of Parker Marine for the construction of the valve station
  • Griffiths Road, end to Madsen Road
  • Madsen Road, Griffiths/Boxwood to East Wellington
  • Third Street across from the Rotary Fieldhouse
  • College Drive at the Parkway (HWY19)
  • The Parkway Trail Parking Lot at Westwood Road and East Wellington Road is closed to the public. The Parkway Trail is still accessible.
  • The trail that connects VIU, the Black Diamond neighbourhood and Third Street is closed to the public. This area is an active construction site for the installation of the water supply main. Construction traffic will enter and exit the work zone at Third Street across from the Rotary Field House.
  • Along the Parkway visual distractions of the project construction will be noticeable at College Drive, behind VIU as well as south of East Wellington Road

Terminal Avenue

  • Terminal Avenue upgrades will be ongoing between Commercial Street and Esplanade Street.
  • The mid-block crosswalk at Gordon Street is closed until the installation of the new signals, expected late this year:
    • Pedestrians please use the crosswalks at Commercial Street and Esplanade for safe crossing
  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Speed limit will be reduced as this will be an active construction zone.
  • Obey all signs and traffic control personnel.

Albert/Fourth Complete Streets and Utility Upgrade project:

  • Albert Street has now reopened to vehicle traffic between Pine and Kennedy Streets.
  • Albert Street may be subject to intermittent single lane traffic Monday to Friday between 7 am to 7 pm.
  • Obey all signs and traffic control personnel, who are there for your safety.
