LEARN MORE

Fire Hall #1 Open House

On Tuesday, October 21, Fire Hall #1 opened up its huge doors and invited the public in to see Nanaimo’s three new Black Diamond Fire Trucks and to learn more about fire and emergency services in our city. From photos with Sparky, to emergency planning information, to getting hands on with the CPR dummies, visitors of all ages enjoyed the open house and getting to know our first responders.

Fall in Nanaimo

While the wonder of summer has passed us by once again, it’s hard to deny the beauty of the Fall as the orange and red leaves cling to the trees at Bowen, Beban and so many of our smaller Nanaimo parks. It’s the perfect time of year for a romantic photo in the leaves, a photo of your kids or pet in a pumpkin costume, or that selfie that you can send to your east coast friends saying “just another walk in the park on the best coast!”

Wrap Battle

Hey, listen up, we’ve got a tip to share. About candy wrappers – you can put ‘em where? Toss ‘em in the blue cart – No! That’s not where they go. Collect them in a bread bag, to prep them for the depot. Chocolate wrappers, chip bags, all part of the plan. Gather ‘em together then take them with your cans. So enjoy your Halloween treats, then remember this rhyme. You’ll help to save the planet, one wrapper at a time.

Jack o'Lanterns

When the time of the Pumpkin King passes, you can place it for compost in the green cart! BUT please be sure to remove any candles or battery-operated lights from your pumpkins first. Also, if you used paint on your pumpkin, toss it in the black cart. Acrylic paints are a type of plastic and can’t be sent to the compost facility.

Fall Back

Remember to set your clocks back an hour! Daylight Savings Time is coming to an end at 2am Sunday morning. That means an hour of extra sleep! Or an hour of extra contemplation, reading, watching tv… whatever it is you do between 1-2 am on a Sunday, you can do it twice.

Lightning strikes for Nanaimo's CSOs

Thanks to a Federal grant of more than $400,000 from Health Canada’s Emergency Treatment Fund, our Community Safety Officers are now equipped with 3 new Ford F-150 Lightnings. They’ll be able to get on-scene quickly in an emergency and they’ll be able to carry more supplies with them in the trunk (and the frunk!).

Halloween Safety

We want everyone safe on Nanaimo’s streets this Halloween! As you head out for trick-or-treating fun, remember to:

  • Stick to well-lit areas and travel in groups
  • Wear reflective gear an use a flashlight
  • Use sidewalks and be cautious when crossing streets
  • Have a spooky, safe, and sweet Halloween night!

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects. For more information on Nanaimo construction projects, visit the current Construction page on the City's website.

  • Expect significant delays due to single lane alternating traffic along Hammond Bay Road between Rutherford Road and Brickyard Road intersections while crews continue to work on replacing sewer and water mains. Avoid delays by taking Rutherford Road and Uplands Drive as an alternative route.
  • Expect slight delays due to single lane alternating traffic along Dickinson Road between Groveland Drive and Medd Road intersections while crews continue to work on replacing water mains. Avoid delays by taking Schook Road, and Dover Road as an alternative route.
  • There will be construction of a new crosswalk at the intersection of Campbell Street and Selby Street. Watch for lane closures, detours, construction signs and traffic control persons.
  • Expect single lane alternating traffic or eastbound lane closures at times on Jingle Pot Road at the intersection of Holland Road. Eastbound traffic watch for possible detour using Holland Road and Ashlee Road.
