Nanaimo Grieves with Tumbler Ridge

On behalf of Council and the City of Nanaimo, I extend our thoughts and heartfelt condolences to the residents, families and loved ones affected by the devastating event in Tumbler Ridge. Communities across British Columbia are grieving and Nanaimo stands with them during this difficult time.

As a sign of our solidarity and compassion, the City of Nanaimo has lowered all flags to half‑mast and they will remain lowered until further notice.

Thank you for joining us in honouring those impacted by this tragedy. Your support reflects the strength and empathy of our community.

The Province of BC has provided a book of condolences, which is available to sign in person in the Parliament Buildings – Hall of Honor located at 501 Belleville Street in Victoria or online

Lighting a Path

We invite you to join us in Sway-a-Lana (Maffeo Sutton Park) as we honour the Land through a special 2026 art installation. You can enjoy the displays until March 16.

Our Costal City

From a thriving harbour and port to rich, diverse ecosystems and breathtaking views, as a community, we benefit greatly from our coastline. Along with the many benefits we enjoy, we are also at risk from impacts related to sea level rise due to climate change. The City is developing a plan on how to manage this risk and we want to hear from you about what you value most about our coastline. A survey is open now until March 13, 2026. Head over to Get Involved Nanaimo to share your thoughts.

Dog Licence Renewal Reminder

This year’s dog licence notices have been mailed, which means it’s the perfect time to make sure your dog is registered with the City of Nanaimo.

Why is licensing important?

  • A licence is one of the quickest ways to be reunited with your dog if they ever get lost—it happens more often than you might think!
  • Licence fees help support the Nanaimo Animal Shelter, which provides essential care for animals in our community.

Watch for your notice and take a moment to renew, to update your contact information or to register your new dog. It’s a small step that makes a big difference for both your pet and local animals.

  • Expect single lane alternating traffic on Third St between Howard Ave and Pine St. Avoid delays by using Fourth St as an alternate route.

  • Expect slight delays due to single lane alternating traffic along Fourth St between Wakesiah Ave and University Cres while crews work on replacing a sanitary sewer.
  • Hammond Bay Road from Brickyard Road to McGirr Road will return to single lane alternating traffic this week while crews work on replacing a sanitary sewer. Expect delays and consider using Rutherford Road and Uplands Drive to detour around the construction works.

Note: All businesses in the construction areas are open unless otherwise posted. When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions.
