Welcome to the WRCC!

The Wildfire Resilience Consortium of Canada (WRCC) launched in 2025 and we are excited to share our first newsletter. The Wildfire Connection is one way the WRCC will engage with the whole of society, connect people to knowledge and each other, and accelerate wildfire resilience in Canada.

The WRCC Establishes a Collaboration with
Natural Hazards Research Australia

The WRCC has established a new collaborative relationship with Natural Hazards Research Australia (NHRA) to strengthen wildfire research and knowledge sharing between Canada and Australia.

This collaboration creates opportunities for joint wildfire resilience initiatives, shared learning, and cross-border research focused on reducing risk and strengthening community preparedness. By connecting expertise across both countries, the WRCC and NHRA aim to support more coordinated, science-based approaches to natural hazards.

This partnership was formalized during the WRCC Building Foundational Knowledge Gathering in Kamloops, BC, October 2025.

Advancing Resilience with New Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Partnership

The WRCC is partnering with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation through a new strategic collaboration focused on advancing wildfire resilience priorities across North America.

The collaboration provides a framework for cooperation in areas such as innovation in wildfire management, Indigenous fire stewardship and knowledge integration, ecologically beneficial fire, and coordinated approaches to research communication, data alignment and resilience metrics.

Engagement at the Indigenous
Public Safety Conference

The WRCC participated in the Indigenous Public Safety Conference hosted by the National Indigenous Fire Safety Council, held October 22-24, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta.

WRCC’s Executive Director Garnet Mierau provided opening remarks. Our Knowledge Mobilization Lead, Shelagh Pyper presented on Leading from Between, and Cole Chretien, Prairie Regional Coordinator, along with board members Michelle Vandevord and Blaine Wiggins hosted a conversation focussed on how the WRCC can meet Indigenous communities where they are and support connections to relevant resources.

The WRCC is pleased to introduce its seven regions and regional coordinators who support wildfire resilience efforts across Canada. Together, these coordinators help connect regional knowledge, priorities, and partnerships to the WRCC’s national work.

International Engagement at the IAWF Human Dimensions Conference

The WRCC participated in the International Association of Wildland Fire’s (IAWF) 18th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit and 7th Human Dimensions of Wildland Fire Conference, held October 20-23 in Calgary, Alberta.

The event brought together wildland fire management agencies, Indigenous knowledge holders, researchers, trainers, and practitioners from around the world to share knowledge and advance understanding of wildland fire management. The WRCC hosted a poster presentation by Garnet Mierau, the WRCC’s Executive Director, and Shelagh Pyper, the WRCC’s Knowledge Mobilization Lead. The WRCC would like to thank the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) for sharing their exhibitor booth so we could have people joining the consortium through our participant intake form.

Participation in the conference supported international knowledge exchange and strengthened connections across the global wildfire community.
