Looking for information on who is running for Mayor and Council in the 2026 Local General Election?

First, you can see who is running on the Candidate Nomination Documents page on the City website. Most candidates will have their own website or dedicated social media page where you can learn more about them. CivicInfo BC keeps a list of the candidates, where you can find more information on them and posts election results. Finally, check out local media outlets for profiles on candidates.

Political Signage 

Thinking about putting up political signs for the upcoming municipal election? Here's a quick reminder!

Election signs aren't allowed to go up just anytime. In Nanaimo, political signs on City-owned public property and private property can only be posted 30 days before General Voting Day (Thursday, September 17). Signs on provincial rights-of-way can go up at the start of the campaign period (Saturday, September 19).

And don't forget, those signs need to come down afterward too! Signs on City-owned public property and private property must be removed by the next business day after General Voting Day (Monday, October 19), while signs on provincial rights-of-way must be removed the day after voting day (Sunday, October 18).

Before putting up a sign, make sure you know the rules about placement, size and permitted locations to avoid fines or having your sign removed. 

No signs are allowed within a 100 m radius of voting places on voting days.

SNUNEYMUXW'imush tu hulitum - Walk of Life

Snuneymuxw First Nation and the City of Nanaimo are thrilled to unveil SNUNEYMUXW ‘imush tu hulitum (Walk of Life) Public Art Tour, a free, self-guided virtual tour celebrating public artworks found throughout Snuneymuxw territory within the City of Nanaimo, created by Snuneymuxw First Nation artists.

This mobile-friendly tour invites residents and visitors to experience Snuneymuxw art while learning about the artists, the stories behind each piece, and the land. An interactive map guides participants to public artworks, where photos, videos, and stories offer opportunities to engage more deeply with each piece. Sensory stops along suggested routes encourage participants to slow down, connect with the land, and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and our relationship to it.

The project was developed in partnership between Snuneymuxw First Nation and the City of Nanaimo, bringing together public art, digital storytelling and place-based learning to create an ongoing resource for residents and visitors.

The SNUNEYMUXW ‘imush tu hulitum (Walk of Life) Public Art Tour is now available online and is free to access through the City's website.

Final Call! 2027 Street Banners - Call to Youth

The City of Nanaimo is seeking art from youth (ages 19 and under) for its 2027 Street Banners. This program offers artists and designers an opportunity to submit proposals for original banner artwork that will be hung in Nanaimo's downtown area. Banners will be on display in the Arts District downtown, along Bowen Road, Third Street and other major routes, creating a vibrant visual presence. The selected youth artist will receive an honorarium of $2,500 for their banner design.

Information Session for 2027 Call for Temporary Public Art

Artists interested in applying to the City of Nanaimo’s 2027 Temporary Public Art Program are invited to attend a virtual information session on Monday, September 21 at 6 pm. During this session, participants will learn more about the program opportunity, application requirements and evaluation process, while gaining insight into what to expect when developing and delivering a public art project in partnership with the City. The session will also provide an opportunity to ask questions and connect with program staff.
