Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill

Books we wish we could read for the first time again

We loved these books so much we wish we could experience them for the first time all over again.

Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill
The story of a marriage and parenthood, written in a unique style. A piece of literature full of musings, quotes and insights. The author uses a stream of consciousness style and tells her story in disjointed sentences. The young woman protagonist moves through her life and expresses her thoughts on all matters. Unlike anything I have read before, I read it all in one sitting. Wish I could read it again for the first time! - Emma

Libraries [Re]Imagined: Space as a Service

Jennifer Murley, Library CEO

We are excited to announce the launch of our new blog series titled 'Libraries [Re]Imagined', aimed at educating our community about the modern library and sparking critical thinking about the role of the BMPL.

This month's theme is "Space as a Service". The public library landscape is evolving, and we are adapting to better serve the needs of our community. There is a growing demand for safe, comfortable, and free public space, often referred to by librarians as 'space as a service'. This concept involves offering space beyond traditional reading and study areas, utilizing the library's physical environment to serve diverse functions, and making it a dynamic and multipurpose facility.

The demand encompasses community meeting spaces for collaboration, green spaces for relaxation, recreation, and education, venues for public events and programs, and spaces that support studying and lifelong learning. Often this is referred to as a ‘third space’ outside of home and work where people seek conversation, neutral ground, and the comfort of feeling connected. Public libraries are a third space – around the world, we are overseeing community gardens and food pantries, addressing food security, and creating opportunities for intergenerational learning. Libraries are also providing space for live events, fairs, and business expos, as well as launching innovation labs that allow patrons to experiment with 3D printing, coding, robotics, and more. Perhaps one of the most underrated services is providing a free, safe, and comfortable spot for people of all ages and abilities to simply 'be'.

Libraries are one of the few public spaces where everyone is welcome without the expectation of paying a fee to access services. They can be a quiet place to study or read, a spot to warm up or cool down, a location with access to clean, safe, public washrooms, or a space for business meetings, interviews, and cultural events that promote inclusion. Our work in reimagining library services is ongoing as we strive to be transformative and responsive to community needs. Our identity is evolving, and we are much more than just a storage space for books and stacks.

If you could [re]imagine the space(s) that we provide, what would you like to see? Complete our survey

Save our school libraries!

Ontario school libraries at risk

In April, the Ontario Ministry of Education changed how schools are funded, eliminating the protected funding for school libraries and library staff, making it easier for school boards to reduce or eliminate school libraries and the staff that keep them running.

The Ontario Library Association has started a campaign to #SaveOurSchoolLibraries. To find out more and join the movement, visit Save Our School Libraries online.

Multi-Use Recreation Feasibility Assessment (MURFA) will study recreational facility needs in Blue Mountains and Collingwood

The Town of The Blue Mountains, the BMPL, the Town of Collingwood, and the Collingwood Public Library announced the launch of the Joint Multi-Use Recreation Feasibility Study (MURFA), awarding the consulting contract to Colliers Project Leaders.

The Joint Assessment will assess the current and future recreational facility needs of residents from both communities and will also explore integrating library services into a multi-use model, as has proven effective in several municipalities across the province. As part of the Assessment, the consulting team from Colliers will create a community consultation plan, research best practices, and use planning and forecasting tools to estimate future recreation needs. The study is expected to take eight months to complete and will provide both Councils with the information required to decide whether to further progress plans that could lead to major community investments.

Robust engagement with residents, community groups, local and provincial sports organizations, third-party recreation providers, and community space users is pivotal to gather the most complete data possible. Subscribe to the project page to be notified about confirmed public engagement opportunities, and to stay informed of the project background, objectives, progress, and outcomes.
