Beacon: UBC Journal of Media Studies  

We are so excited to announce the creation of Beacon: UBC Journal of Media Studies!

Beacon will be the first student-led undergraduate, peer & faculty reviewed online multimedia journal in Canada about Media Studies. It aims to showcase the most ambitious & outstanding works of current UBC Media Studies students and push boundaries in new media and communications studies!

Canned Foreign Multimedia Exhibition

Canned Foreign is a multimedia exhibition that features the work of four half-Japanese artists, responding to themes of identity, diaspora, queerness, and cultural heritage through their own subjective experiences.

CENES Film Series: Coming Out

The Department of Central, Eastern & Northern European (CENES) is hosting a 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall German Film Series. They will be showcasing the film Coming Out (1989, dir. Heiner Carow).

Concert at the Belkin: Spill
Wed Nov. 27, 2pm @
Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery

Inspired by the exhibition Spill,
UBC Contemporary Players will be back to the Belkin Art Gallery for a concert. Led by director Paolo Bortolussi, this student ensemble from UBC School of Music will animate the Gallery for an afternoon program exploring our relationship to continental waters, their impaired movement, contamination and political rights.

The Global Pathfinder Award 

Go Global is excited to announce the new Global Pathfinder Award! 

Go Global will be granting $2000 (summer programs) and $5000 (term based exchanges) awards to off-set travel and study costs for Go Global programs, to make studying abroad more accessible.

The application deadline is November 15th @ 4pm, so go to the link below to apply!

Asian Pacific Youth Council Invites Short Film Submissions 

If you've created short (max. 30 min) films that pertain to any area or people of Asia, or if you are a filmmaker of Asian heritage, the Asian Youth Pacific Council invites you to submit your film! Selected films will be screened and the filmmaker will be provided a $100 honorarium and invited to talk about their work at a public event. 

To apply, fill out the submission application below and email Chandima Silva with your abstract by November 17th.

DMED 500: Foundations of Digital Media 

There are still spots available for BMS Year 4 students interested in registering for the DMED 500 course in Term 2, offered to BMS students on the UBC campus by the Centre for Digital Media. The course outcomes include exploration of and a critical perspective on digital media, which will act as a common basis for all subsequent discussion and collaboration between students with artistic, technical or interdisciplinary backgrounds.

If you are a 4th year BMS student, and your interested in registering for DMED 500, please email arts.mediastudies@ubc.ca.

BMS Advising Holiday Hours

For the remainder of the term, BMS Advising hours will be on Mondays, with pre-booked appointments available between 10am-12pm, and drop in appointmetns from 1-4pm. If you would like to book an appointment, please email arts.mediastudies@ubc.ca.

*Please also note that advising will be closed for the winter holidays from December 24th - January 2nd, 2020.

Apply for Go Global Core Plus Courses!

If you would like to have Go Global transfer credits considered to fulfill the Core Plus requirement, they must be submitted before your exchange term. Any courses submitted after an exchange term will not be considered to fulfill the Core Plus requirement.

The December 2019 final exam schedule has been posted. The schedule is searchable by course! 

The final day of classes for 2019W Term 1 is Friday, November 29th. Please take into account your exam schedule when making holiday travel plans. To see the exam schedule, click on the link below.
