Archives Update

Delta Archives, 1994-006-015. Oysters being loaded onto scow for transplanting.

Delta Archives volunteers have been transcribing entries from the work diaries of John Christopherson, manager of the BC Packers oyster plant in East Delta. The work done up to now covers the start of the diaries we have (1949) up to when the harvesting of oysters was ordered to be stopped in 1963. The transcriptions highlight entries of note that were written down and are easier to read than the original hand-written diaries. They are available to view upon request, as are the original diaries. In addition to these, we have other records of the oyster business, including a number of historic photos.

The plant was first built in 1940 on Big Slough in East Delta. The plant was built on a wharf that extended south from 112 Street (Oliver Road). John Christopherson had previously been a manager of the Crescent Oyster Company, located nearby in South Surrey. John and his wife Grace were active in the community of Delta as members of the Kinsmen/Kinettes. Grace served as the first President of Delta's Kinette Club, which was founded in 1951.

The records and photos of the Christophersons can be seen on our database by following the link here: cr-48 1994-006 found 119 records - Museum and Archives - City of Delta

What’s on Tap? Mini Exhibition

Sharing a meal and a drink is a great way to get to know people in the community. As settlers moved here from around the world, they shared their favourite drinks and got to know each other. Come by the Discovery Centre and check out our latest mini exhibition in the Archives “What’s on Tap?” developed by our Young Canada Works Summer Student and Curatorial Assistant, Iver Smith, featuring some of the bottles in the Delta Heritage Society collections.

Culture Days Art Contest – Voting Open!

Voting is open to the public at Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre, Tsawwassen Arts Centre and North Delta Centre for the Arts, from September 25-October 23, 2026. We invite members of the public to stop by and cast their vote for their favourite entry. The top three submissions will get a prize, and the top 10 submissions will become part of an exhibition at North Delta Centre for the Arts and the Tsawwassen Arts Centre through the end of 2027.
